2.1 OTA - Camera eating battery after close

I have this issue... but I've come to the conclusion that it's not an issue... just a bug in the battery usage reader.

I used my camera on Saturday night, for both pics and video. Ever since then, my battery usage has showed 96% for the camera. But my battery is NOT draining faster than normal.

My battery is currently at 53% and it's been 23 hours since my last charge. I've only charged it twice since I used the camera.

The only real battery drain I've noticed - for anything on 2.1 - is when the phone isn't allowed to sleep, so awake time is 100%. The culprit is something in the Android System, but I have no idea what it is. The only fix is a reboot.

I've learned to pretty much just ignore the battery information, much like the signal bars... which is annoying, because it should be right, but what are you gonna do.

someone with the issue check and see if turning airplane mode on and off will kill it.

I would try, but I have a feeling the awake time issue I've noticed may be caused by Airplane Mode... just a hunch... but I don't want to have to reboot now. Since my last reboot, my battery life has been awesome. I didn't have the 50% on the last reboot, so didn't have to do the Airplane Mode trick... and the phone is running flawlessly. (Except the signal bars)

oddly enough, i opened my camera, took a pic, and backed out of the camera app. went to battery usage and i had 6% camera. now i am at 5%, so it seems, this time, for me, backing out did kill it properly.

Unfortunately I found out about this bug at rock on the range Saturday morning. I took about 10 pictures over the course of 4 hours and my battery was dead.

Here is how I fixed it on the second day though. After I would take a pic or vid I would select the option that takes me to the gallery and would then put the phone into sleep mode. I shot about 10 bids and 10 pics that day over 12 hours, used the gps and still had a little juice left.

Hope this helps.

Is this only with the stock camera app? I haven't taken a picture in a long time, but I used FX Camera then and have not put it back on since V3 leak. Does this battery drain happen with all camera apps too?

Odd. After reading Caddyman's post about taking a pic, backing out, and it not showing high usage battery I tried.

Ever since the OTA the same procedure resulted in the 96% usage problem. This time, like Caddyman, it seems to have closed properly because the percentage is 6 instead of 96.

I agree, we may be barking up the wrong tree. Yesterday I activated the camera several times, but didn't take any pictures. I watched my battery drain through the day, and while it was frustrating that it didn't last longer, it didn't appear to be due to the camera.

Today, I took a picture (with the trackball) but pressed the "trash can" button instead of saving it. Immediately after, my camera battery drain was showing 8%. It is now down to 5%, so I have to agree that the "gobbling battery" issue appears to not be happening today.

More testing needed....

One thing I frequently do is take a pic and then "Share" it via MMS or Facebook. Just tried the MMS route, looked at battery usage, and all seems okay. I intentionally did NOT "back out" of the camera app either. I don't recall if after sending the text where it returns to...

Hmm.. I just spent several minutes trying to make that bug happen: opened camera.. took two photos.. closed camera by "backing out".. checked battery usage and no camera listed.

I then tried to make the bug happen by doing the same thing, only instead of "backing out," I pressed the home key; no camera listed in the battery usage area.

Well, I'm not sure why this stopped as mysteriously as it appeared. Gonna have to keep an eye on it and see if it happens again.

Perhaps the device is adjusting to the camera use of the user.

I can't think of another reason, and that reason could be dependent on the way it is designed to go about having things available quickly for us.

RAM is the method that most computers are set up to use for applications and programs, but there are other things in play on a Windows operating system, such as indexing and prefetch, etc for a gradually quicker response.

I keep wondering if Android is set up to get faster, or at least more efficient, with long term use, having its own, imperfect, ways of implementing that.

Just speculation.. ;)

I had the same thought, Frisco. Perhaps Android is set up for "learned behavior" as some apps are. Good a thought as any at this point I suppose.

if you take a pic, and want to close the camera, reboot your phone....

it is a PITA, takes 5 minutes, but that is a workaround.

Yup, been doing this to me since thefirst leak, and does it on the Dinc ocasionally too. This is the only fix I've found.

I thought Frisco's post was in jest...

No.. speculating on whether or not the device is storing user habits wrt apps and processes.. long shot, I know.

One thing that flies in the face of that speculation is the linux base of the OS, which is more efficient than the Windows analogy.

Ok, so I plugged my phone in earlier to get a full charge... and also to see if the camera reading would go away - it's still there at 96%. Have not used the camera since charging it. It's been 3 1/2 hours with some calls and heavy texting using Google Voice... and my battery is at 95%

So I'm 99.9% sure that the reading is just a bug and the camera is NOT draining the battery.

I took a few more pics this evening and the camera glitch seems to have resolved itself...at least for today.

Pics this morning, no trouble. Pics this eve, no trouble. Who knows what tomorrow will bring.

I don't think it's a bug at all...

When you go under "Battery Use" you will see that it shows "Random Application" and then the usage. Right now mine is "Maps" 91%. But if you click on THAT, it says "Battery used by applications, when running". So I'm thinking that it's trying to tell you that, for my example, 91% of my current battery use is done by running applications. I don't think it means any specific application.

I'm wondering if the application shown is the one that used the most battery, or the last one used... something like that. Because "Maps" certainly isn't listed under my "Running Services".

Any thoughts?
