Two Pixel 7 Pro Questions

rdpinr

Newbie
Hello.

I have two separate questions I was hoping someone could help me with.

1) I noticed that the "flip to shhh" feature that automatically puts the phone into "Do Not Disturb" mode when it is set on a table face down is gone. Was it discontinued on purpose, or was it an accident? I'm only curious, because I liked that feature, and would like to see it return.

2) Yesterday I sent my sister a text with the name of a website that she asked me for. I only wanted to send her an ordinary text which included "----.com" in my message. The moment I hit the send button... POOF!... my phone automatically added an advertisement for the website onto my text. I can see how many people would think that that is pretty cool, but I did not like it. I did not like content being automatically added to my message that I did not include on my own. Is there a way to turn this off?

Thank you for your assistance.

Google didn’t accidentally remove it — but they did quietly retire it.

Why it’s gone

  • “Flip to Shhh” was part of Digital Wellbeing and relied on the Motion Sense / Active Edge framework that older Pixels used.
  • Starting with newer Pixel generations (including the Pixel 7 series), Google has been phasing out some of those motion‑based features.
  • As a result, the toggle simply vanished from settings for many users after updates.

Can it come back?

Right now, there’s no official way to re‑enable it. Google hasn’t announced plans to restore it, and the feature isn’t present in Android 14 or 15 builds for the Pixel 7 line.

Closest alternative

You can still automate Do Not Disturb with:

  • Schedules
  • Rules triggered by events (like connecting to Wi‑Fi or a Bluetooth device)
  • Quick Settings tile for fast manual toggling

Not as magical as flipping the phone over, but still workable.

2)

This one surprises a lot of people the first time it happens.

What’s happening

When you type a URL in Google Messages, the app may automatically generate a link preview — a little card with the site name, icon, or description. It’s meant to be helpful, but not everyone likes it.

The important part

You can turn this off.

How to disable link previews in Google Messages

  1. Open Messages
  2. Tap your profile icon (top right)
  3. Go to Messages settings
  4. Select Advanced
  5. Turn off “Show web link previews”

After that, your messages will send exactly as you typed them — no added cards, no auto‑generated content.

If you want, I can also walk you through:

  • Checking whether your carrier’s RCS settings are affecting link previews
  • Setting up a quick DND toggle that feels closer to “Flip to Shhh”
  • Exploring automation apps (like Modes & Routines) that can mimic the old behavior

Just tell me what direction you want to go.

Thank you for all of that great information, Milo. Not sure either situation is important enough to me beyond a simple fix. I did lose you at step 5 of messages, though. I do not have a "Show web link previews" setting. Here is a shot of what I have. Would it be one of those? Too much beyond that, and I'll just start using the "type the word dot" trick. Thank you again for such detailed information.View attachment 180591

Thank you for the great information, Milo. Beyond anything really simple, neither issue is that important to me. I did get lost on your step 5 because I do not have the setting you described. Here is a screenshot of what I have. Is it one of those? Again, thank you for such detailed information.

On my P8P it's in Messages Settings/ Automatic Previews
There are toggles you can turn on or off, for all previews or web link previews
Sorry for double posting. I shouldn't be trying to do this on my phone, but I wanted to include the screenshot. Yes, I found a "Show all previews" setting, and it is currently on. I will turn it off and see if that does it. Thank you.

Eh I do not care, or anyone in here, grab a pepsi and relax.

Mine does that too, have you disable Preview of web site on your app?

So, I texted my sister the same website again after telling her I was trying something. My text was sent just as I composed it, and the graphics and ad were not automatically added. Problem solved. Thank you once again. As for "flip to shhh", I guess I can only say "Oh, well". I do know how to schedule modes, but the way you could spontaneously activate do not disturb without even touching the screen was really handy to me. Maybe it will get ressurected someday. I'm quite happy with your assistance, so I am unfollowing this thread. Take care!
