Audio quality?

So is the audio quality crappy and too quiet or is it just me? I tried listening to music using the included headphones yesterday on a plane, and I could barely hear the audio! I ended up switching to my iPod, which I had hoped my G1 would replace.

Has anyone used the G1 with different (i.e. better) headphones, and what were your results?

(I know the headphone jack is proprietary, but I'm hoping with better headphones/earbuds and a usb-to-3.5mm converter I can sqeeze better quality and volume from the G1. We'll see.)

What headset did you use on the G1 and on your iPod?
 
I used the earbuds that came packaged with each device: the black handsfree earbuds with the G1, and the white Apple earbuds with the iPod.

I don't have a usb-to-3.5mm adapter to try, but I think I'll get one and test the G1 with different earphones.
 
Have you tried to use one of the mini-usb to 3.5mm adapter? I have one here and i use it with my Sony headphones and the quality is good.

Well, yeah, that's exactly what I'm asking. I wanted to get others' experiences before I spent the cash on the adapter, and before my 14-day return period ran out.

Thanks! I'll order an adapter tomorrow and see what happens. I suspected the included earbuds just sucked, but I wasn't positive.
 
In most cases, the included headphones are always horrible. I am using the 3.5 mm adapter with a pair of $40 Sony earbuds from Radioshack and they sound very good. I don't understand why anyone would use the included pair, unless they just can't tolerate the adapter dongle. I strongly recommend using aftermarket headphones.

P.S. I am actually surprised at the quality of audio output from the G1. There is no idle "hiss" that I have noticed and all the tunes I've been playing actually sound better than I expected. Can't say the same for my Nokia.
 
I only used the included earbuds because I don't have an adapter yet - it shipped today, as a matter of fact. I'll either be using a pair of iPod earbuds I have (seriously, anything's better than the included pair) or a pair of Ultimate Ears that I received as a gift a few years ago (except I find them uncomfortable). We'll soon see which produces better overall sound quality.
 
Ooh, yes, I just received my mini USB-to-3.5mm adapter and I am very pleased with the results. The included earbuds SUCK!
 
Pick up the adaptor shown below, from www.seidioonline.com

I use them with my Vibe headphones, and simply because the Vibe's are "in ear", the sound is louder. Also, they are GREAT headphones, and the sound from the G1 is really pretty good!

As someone posted above, no hissing or feedback sounds. And, with the adaptor below, if a call comes in, simply hit the answer button, your music stops, you can talk on the phone using the adaptor's built in mic, and when you end the call with the adaptor's answer button, your call hangs up and your music starts back up from where it stopped when the call came in!

Works very well.....

I really need to get an adapter so I can use my skullcandys... In ear headphones just feel weird now :/ I only really use them when I'm in class and not meant to be listening to music... The cure for boring lectures!

Size and relatively decent quality is more important to me than lugging around giant headphones everywhere I go. But I agree, the quality isn't as good as it could be.

As far as comfort, I am impressed with Apple's newest earbud design... They're MUCH more comfortable than a lot of other earbuds I've worn.
 
Audi quality is very good and makes the need for a lame 3.5 adaptor more frustrating. Especially when you consider the the device is not loud enough.

Stay away from any buds above 16 ohms.
 
How is the volume when listening to music. I havent got a G1 yet but am strongly considering it. I ride a motorbike and have earphones in my helmet and on long distances wear earplugs. Does the volume go high enough for this set up. I currently use my bold and I can hear most of the songs most of the time like this.

I tried this with the supplied buds on my bike and could not really hear the music. Others have reported that better buds are louder and I believe that the volume of an mp3 can be increased using software such as audacity.

I use a set of skullcandy TIs with my G1, they work pretty well, especially as you can shorten the cord length of the skullcandys by unplugging the extender, this then fits perfectly into the (included) adapter i got with my G1. I take it you didnt get one with yours?!
 
After the cupcake update I got the Jabra BT3030 to use with my istuff 808 bass earphones. I don't know if its the bluetooth connection but the sound quality is so tinny. No bass what so ever. It was really disappointing as I dont really want an ugly adapter hanging off the end of my phone. Used the istuff 808's on my ipod and the bass is HUGE which makes it even more disappointing. Has anyone else had the same experience? I'm wondering if its the bluetooth connection that loses the bass or just the phone itself.

There are several volume controls on the phone, I suspect that you had the music volume too low.

I've had no issue with the included earbuds, but it's possible you got a defective set.
 
HTC has a Y adapter with a port for charging and a port for 2.5mm

Radio has an 2.5mm to 3.5mm adapter (makesure you get the one with 3 rings or you will only have music from one speaker)

But, I charge and play music in the car.

Oh and there is post at xda developer on how to fix your volume, mine is loud as heck now.
