Official EVO Rumors and Speculation thread

It would be a big bummer if 5 out of ten reviews reported that problem, I have read tons of reviews and info about the Evo and this is the first time I have ever heard that. It might be user error or an isolated incident, can you show us the link I would like to read it.

I remember reading a couple of other people mentioning it as well...hopefully they're isolated incidents.

We did run into one potential serious problem when attempting to use the camera: there were multiple times that it would give us a memory card error and not allow us to save any pictures. When trying to send pictures the EVO automatically scales down the size for MMS, but at times we also got a could not resize error and so were unable to send the image. These issues were fixed via a soft reset which leads us to believe it is all software related, but hopefully these issues will get resolved quickly because obviously it was frustrating, especially since pictures can't always be retaken.

I appreciate the fast response. I hope its just a glitch and not a widespread issue. Im confident it wont be a big problem. I guess we will find out.

No problem.

I agree too...Hopefully it's a glitch or faulty card, or something...but if that's widespread, well than shit that's the kind of thing that can turn off a ton of customers.

Also, most reports have commented that switching to a new SD card will solve the problem. However, if Sprint is talking out of their rear's saying it's just the Google I/O phones, and ALL phones contain this problem, I can see a lot of potential non-tech users becoming a bit annoyed, as you said.

Hopefully, the linked poster is correct.

For their sake it damn well better be isolated to the I/O phones. Most users won't give Sprint a second chance on something simple like this. Seriously, I swear that sometimes this company is run by baboons with Down's Syndrome.

Hahaha, I'm just laughing at this in advance incase it's potentially removed...

Reading all this has made me both happy and sad at the same time!! At least now I'm in the know but really hope that it is a SW prob and that also the June 4th ones will have the issue fixed like what was mentioned earlier FINGERS CROSSED!!! I think that maybe htc/sprint can perhaps get to work on an OTA update since the phones not out yet so that way they can be fixed ASAP since there well aware of the prob!!

here's to wishful thinking and June 4th being an amazing day!!!

BTW Which is the Astro app you guys were talking about and how good is it??

Regarding the SD Card issues, since I'm a victim of it, I've taken it upon myself to try and investigate it to the best of my abilities. Right now, I'm experimenting with defragging and chkdsk'ing the SD card, and will hopefully have some additional information in the next hour.

I'm hopeful that the system logs could give me some better information, but without root, I cannot read them. I'm tempted to privately reach out to Toast and see if he'll release the SU method to me, so I can troubleshoot further.

I assume you have tried formatting the card and seeing how that goes, right?

Also, have you tried a different card?

Yes, I reformatted the card the other night using the specific formatter app, and went for just over 24 hours without a failure. Then today over lunch, when I was showing the phone off, I had the failure. And every time I've been using the phone, I made sure to jump over to Astro and/or the Gallery, to access the SD Card, to see if it was failing or not.

I have yet to try a different card - the 16gb class 6 I ordered is somewhere in USPS limbo. I'm hoping for it to show up tomorrow or Wednesday.

First wanted to address this card issue.
From what I have read it has something to do with how the SD card was made; once the card is formated it is supposed to fix the problem for good. Of course they haven't had their phones for a month so whos' to say if its for good.

I hadn't thought of setting a timer thinks for the idea@!@

I swear if the Evo could get a restraining order against me it would!

That really sucks monkey nuggets. One of my biggest pet peeves with technology is when something that is so basic just doesn't work - whether it was no MMS on the iPhone, or camera phones without a flash, the Pre not initially coming with the ability to record video, or a freaking SD card that doesn't work properly (be it hardware or software). These are issues that are minor, and things that 19.99 dumb phones do without issue. Figure your shit out - whether your Apple, HTC, or anyone in between. [/rant]

Seriously... Definitely a pain in the ass. Even if reformatting is all you have to do that is still lame. If that doesn't fix the problem and I have to just buy a new card then it will REALLY suck "monkey nuggets".

If you wish to continue addressing the sd card issue, please go read the thread in the Troubleshooting sub forum. We've already covered a great deal over there. The reformatting DOES NOT FIX the problem for good. Mine only remained stable for about 24 hours.

This will become a much bigger deal if it is not remedied in Froyo, as users will not only lose access to media but also to apps, if they choose to install them to their SD Cards.

Having to reformat is almost as bad as having to buy a new one. These are things that your average user will not do, nor will they have the time or patience to deal with. They'll return the phone lickity-split and pick up something else, likely on another carrier...simply Incredible that Sprint would allow a f-up like this. Granted this could all be premature, but it's clearly a noticeable issue with the first ~2000 EVOs, that's not exactly comforting.

Twat waffles, the whole lot of them if they screw up this one.

Froyo won't even enter into the equation of this does not quickly become a non-existant issue. Froyo is a good 3 months out, at best, and there's no way a new customer will deal with something as ridiculous as this for that long.

Aww so sorry to hear your panties are in a knot. The issue is being worked on is it not? Now people are posting they are afraid to get the phone because of a problem with SD card. If you also notice I said who can tell if it's permanent.

Well lets not get to ahead of ourselves, I'm suspecting that Sprint and HTC released these phones into the wild for beta testing. To make sure that they are functioning as intended. I'd rather see these screw ups happen before launch then after launch. It that's the biggest problem that the phone has so far, I am encouraged that its just a minor issue. If that's the case I'm sure Sprint/HTC will take care of the issue. I sure hope so.

Your attitude is not appreciated. There is no proof that Sprint, HTC, and/or Android having acknowledged this issue... just random post by some schmuck on Facebook.

There's maybe 2 dozen folks on the forums who have an Evo - and a non-trivial number have posted about having this issue. And no, I'm not going to go back through the thread to count names, just to satisfy you.

Assuming we have no solid developments this week, I'm looking forward to launch date to confirm whether launch Evo's have different build/software version numbers or not.

I disagree with part of your statement...that it's just a "minor issue". Taking pictures and having them periodically not save is a big issue. As is having pictures not sending periodically - again, it's at random too. So there's no setting or workaround, it just happens. These are the little - SIMPLE - things that all customers expect to work without issue 100% of the time. Given the sample size here, this has the workings of a big issue.

I truly hope that this is limited to the SD cards/EVOs from I/O and that there are no further issues...but I know Sprint well enough to not hold my breath.

Yeah I dont exactly feel kosher.. I know I'm gonna be pissed if I have to waste my time with that BS. Another thing that I would have liked is for there to be a side loader for the SD Card and not have to take the phone apart.

P.S. Twat waffles is the funniest thing I have heard in a while. Thanks for the laugh :)

Well if its a defective SD card rather then a software issue, IMHO its a minor issue. I have around 10 or more micro sd cards laying around my house. You can get a 8gb card at walmart for under 25$. Now if its a firmware or software issue I completely concur. We just have to wait and see. But I do agree that the casual non techie consumer might just waive the white flag and return the phone.

You don't send phones out in the wild for beta testing to 5000 random folks. That's industrial suicide, and about as bone-headed a move they could do.

My company does crap like this all the time. (in-house issues mostly though). Normally it's because one person is hell-bent on a timetable and is too stupid to see the ramifications of not fully testing out product _____ properly beforehand.

This whole situation with the SD card reminds me of the same thing. With the number of people who are having this problem, there is ZERO chance this would not have been caught with proper testing. So, we either have a case of 1) this really is only affecting the units given at the I/O, or 2) they rushed this out the gate too soon.
I am hoping for option #1, but I think we will find it behind door # 2. With how these last few months has played out, it just feels like they were rushed.

Please Sprint, prove my fears unjustified.

Friday is coming closer, and I am looking forward to laying my touch diamond to rest. It will find its way to the drawer of old phones. Since I am new to android, I will use the time to get appbrain together.:)

Well it was just speculation on my behalf. But whether or not if its a boneheaded decision or not. Its better for them to release 5,000 phones and find then remedy the problem, then to not release it, not find the problem then release 1 million units. Whether or not it was calculated decision, it just might be a blessing in disguise. But what do I know?
After all those 5,000 phones were free.
