Do I need to create a Gold Card for my phone? Its been a year since I bought it, so HTC warranty is off, so is the carrier warranty.... Should I create one for 'just in case'? OR should I just root w/o it?

I have an HTC Desire on a 3 year contract from Telus. I didn't buy the extended warranty, and was wondering whether my phone was covered by the HTC 2 year warranty, although I bought it on contract from Telus. (The warranty from telus is at an extra 7 dollars a month)
