hey man, I have an unlocked/unbranded desire, so have a different method than you, as you'll need to make a goldcard etc, and there is something about the simlocks with certain radio files... check lekky's guide to rooting and the 2.2 upgrade... my best advice is take your time with it, follow each step, and make sure you don't panic when it looks like it's all going wrong (the fone will restart a number of times and do all sorts of stuff you dont expect)... you'll be fine (although it is at own risk!)

lol. i feel proper thick . especially as i used to be a programmer since the days of basic and windows 3.1. lol. it just seems complicated and scary due to the orange rom apparently being an issue. so root with gold card??? or other way? sorry to be a pain

Just follow my guide to root, and move to the 2.2 rom if you fancy it. Made the instructions as easy as I could
