I totally agree about the volume and quality of the speaker--not sure there's much more you can do about that other than the app you've mentioned that you've tried.

As far as performance goes--well, I actually run stock most of the time and I think the GNex is fast enough already that I actually underclock it to improve time between battery charges. You can actually underclock the stock kernel with something like setCPU. For overclocking, you'll have to flash a custom kernel. There's too many to mention, but I've used LeanKernel before and heard really good things about Franco's Kernel. In-vogue ROMs seem to be AOKP and JBSourcery.

Take a scan through the all-things-root areas for ideas and feedback on what others are using and recommending. Also, be sure if you flash a kernel that you flash it on a compatible ROM version (the dev's thread should list which version of Android it will work on).
