When I receive a chat from google talk, i usually get a green/white chat bubbles as a notification icon. Now for some odd reason, it's now a white/black square message icon, almost like a SMS icon. How can I revert back?

I get a sync error when I try to sync my google contacts. Everyone google sync works (ie. picassa, calender, email). I've searched pretty extensively without any real solution or even explanation of the problem. anyone experience this, and know how they solved it?
