I know you asked how I got my GPS to do okay for me but I don't know what thread it was in. 
This was over a month ago when I did it so memory fails me somewhat. I believe I put in the number combination that has been brought up in other posts. Then I downloaded GPS Test and GPS Status. Today when I turned on GPS inside a store, I opened GPS status and clicked Start. It sat for about 30 seconds and locked into Satellites. I verified it working after opening GPS Status and making sure it showed my stats. But you could probably use something else like Navigator or whatever else. That may not be much help but it's all I can remember.
