Root [1st Gen] Rooting questions

Got a Kindle Fire 7" HDX and now I wish to root my Kindle Fire 1st gen. There are many instruction sites and I will chose one and follow it. I WOULD like to have a goal in mind as to the ROM and how to get there. Knowledgeable as to PC and OSs but a complete noob as to Android. Any pointers? TNX
