This morning I was using my phone when it went haywire. It wasn't scrolling properly, kept going up when I was trying to move down the screen, and brought up apps that I was not trying to use. At first I was thinking maybe it was a virus, but when I removed and reinserted the battery it booted up fine and has apparently been all right ever since. What gives?

It happens.
Cheap to expensive devices.
Rebooting usually clears things up.
Also a system clear cache will fix a lot of problems

yep if you have not rebooted or turned off the phone in a while the cache files can get corrupted and cause issues like that.
