Help DUH! How to answer phone?

I just bought this phone from eBay, and immediately upgraded it to Gingerbread. I want a tool, not an life-absorbing activity or hobby.

I'm accustomed to my iPhone, which is totally different, and, for me, intuitive. This is sooooo different, so I've spent two days obsessed with learning and trying to "get" android. So far, it just doesn't work the same as my mind. I'll mention a couple of things:

1. I'd really like to be able to answer the phone. But it won't let me. What settings should I have in the phone to permit me to actually answer it?
a. Got a call and it lighted up. I pressed answer. Nothing. Kept pressing answer. Nothing. Finally pressed ON button and it disconnected.
b. While on a call, call came in. I hung up and pressed answer. Again and again. Nothing. I had to call back.
Sigh. What good is a phone to me, if I can't answer it?

2. When I am talking to someone, a loud voice from the phone announces: YOU HAVE TWO NEW EMAILS!!!!! WTF? I have sounds disabled and silenced . . . supposedly. What can I do to shut her up? Further, I do NOT want my emails uploaded UNLESS I ask for them, thus I have sync email disabled in settings. But the phone (it's becoming a personified evil enemy instead of a tool! <g>

I have so many other questions, but I just can't focus on them unless I find a way to answer the phone!

Settings>sound>notification. There is a choice for silent..

On mine, you swipe to answer call. I think there is a accessibility app that will assign to the volume key or the like.

You aren't alone. I got my husband his first cell for a bike trip. Got him a simple but decent phone - gave it to him with the manual. I got a call at the office (I had speakerphone on- he actually asked how to answer the damned thing. It was a flip phone so he had at least 3 choices.
I gave him 2 choices - RTFM or ask our daughter. The office cracked up!
He's an electrical engineer by profession!

It has been eight years. The android made me nuts after a few years of iPhone. And I did, indeed, return to iPhone.
I gave up!
Apparently my brain wasn't capable of making the switch.

And here I am, having began my smartphone adventure with a crummy 5.1, wondering how in the world anyone can stand an iphone.

I set androids up for people.
If I spend ten minutes with an iphone I am ready to take a hammer to it.

If I had to by one, I would want to take a hammer to the seller.

Android is not necessarily the answer, it's an option. If you are happy and comfortable with your iphone choice that's great. Welcome back.
