Don't forget to do some research first @ocnbrze as the higher the firmware the Switch is running the harder it is to modify. There are also different hardware revisions that make it harder..

Also consider that once modified it is potentially very easy for Nintendo to detect (once back in the OS) at which time you will get banned from playing online.

so would an older switch be better? maybe buy one off of ebay or craigslist?

Older the better, but the earlier the firmware the better as the higher the firmware the less you can do. The new iPatched units are locked down atm.

There is a serial number checker out in the wild so you can check which revision of the console you have. That does not mean you wont pickup a second hand blocked unit tho.. the only way you can tell it is blocked is to try and play online as the eshop will actually let you purchase stuff, it's the download that is blocked!

Sneaky..

Some great progress being made now..LineageOS now released and running..

The Good..
You get all of your basic Android features, support for Google services, and even support for native Nvidia Shield applications. That means you can play Half-Life and Portal on the go, and even make use of GeForce Now if you’re a part of the beta. The Joycons and Nintendo Pro Controller work without a hitch, keyboard and mouse works when docked..

The Bad..
  • Deep sleep, so battery life is not great
  • Auto rotation
  • Screen off in dock
  • Charging is not detected, but console still charges
  • Some apps don’t handle joycon inputs correctly
  • The touchscreen sometimes detects touches even when your finger is just floating over the screen.
