Migrating Android to Android

I'm planning on turning my DroidX in for a Samsung Galaxy 3 next month (I'm with Verizon), which I guess means I'm going from Android 2.3 to Android 4.something.

  • What do I need to do in advance to simplify the migration and maximize the quick availability on the new phone of all my existing apps, app settings, app registrations, and app data?
  • Can my memory card come out of one and go right into the other, or is there a way to migrate everything on the old phone's memory card to the new one?
  • Is it possible for my app and website logins (user names and passwords) to migrate?
  • Any pitfalls to expect?
 
Having the apps on your sdcard isn't worth it to me because a portion of the apps will still be on the device.

If you're rooted you can use titanium backup, that way you can transfer the titanium directory and restore from there.

However, since you're going from GB to ICS, some of your current apps may not be compatible and restoring from titanium will do more harm than good.

Your best bet is to let your apps restore from the play store and set everything manually.

Gingerbread (GB) is android 2.3.x while ics is android 4.0.x


There are apps that can backup a list of all your apps and then you can redownkoad them once you have the new phone
 
App Referrer sends a list of all your apps with download links to your email address. But they are all listed in the Play Store under My Apps. Unfortunately, it lists every app you ever installed even if you deleted it. I had understood from advice on here that I could reinstall all my apps in one go on setting up my new phone but although I clicked to do that it didn't happen.
 
Something else to keep in mind is you should store stuff in the cloud. Most newer phones are not coming with external SDCARDS so you limited to apps and cables to get if off your computer or old phone.
 
On your existing phone running 2.3.x go to menu>settings>privacy and make sure you have backup data and automatic restore checked. This will backup app data to your Google account and when you register the new phone it will restore your apps and data to the new 4.0.x device. You might also want to look into Appbrain where you can save the current list of installed apps and push it to the new phone once you've registered it.

The one thing you will have to backup and restore manually is your SMS messages.
