Ok, so before someone accuses me of being a thief, I should probably provide some context: My mother runs a towing business alongside my great-uncle (it's called Fred's Towing and Recovery in AK; you can fact-check it.), and I sometimes go to the yard to help out. Anytime we get a PPI (Private Property Impound), we have to send a 30-Day letter out to the owner. If they don't respond within that time, then we have to empty out the car and send it to auction. Two days ago, my mom found the device shown below (a Samsung Galaxy Tab A 10.1) in one of the cars that was to be sent to auction. She put it on the charger (the battery was dead) so she could take a closer look at the software on it later. Yesterday, I saw the tablet and asked her about it. After explaining how she got it, I got interested, so I convinced her to take it home with us so we could look at it together. While she was dropping off the last tow of the day at the yard, I grabbed the tablet and got in the tow truck (we drive it home after closing up). I turned it on, only to discover that the tablet looked as though it was brand new, so I pressed "start". That's when I discovered that not only was it not brand new, but it had most likely been stolen and wiped, as on the following screen, it said this: "An unauthorized attempted has been made to reset your device to factory default settings. Connect to a Wi-Fi or mobile network to verify your identity.". Neither me nor my mother is the original owner, and we don't know the password. Is there any way to bypass this?
