Highlighted numbers when I enter pin on lockscreen

Does anyone know how to disable the annoying new feature where the lock screen code numbers get highlighted and made visible for anyone close by?
 
what phone do you have? my lockscreen does not highlight on my note 10+. it does show the number briefly.....is that what you are talking about?

Two things: this isn't new! My old phone, running 5.1, has always done this. And, as far as I know, it can't be disabled. I just looked through my 8.0.0 phone's settings and found nothing useful.

What device do you have and what is its Android version?

On newer android versions go to:
Phone settings > Security & Location > Show passwords and disable it.

On older android versions go to:
Phone settings > Security > Make passwords visible and disable it.

I did that before posting--it had no effect on the lock screen, only passwords.
