Galaxy S4 Keeps Shutting Off With Full Battery

Hello!

So I'm at a convention out of town and my phone kept shutting off at random- usually at below 50% battery, though still working besides that. Then it got to the point where it was doing the same thing while it was plugged into a charger, and now it turns off after having it on for less than 30 seconds.

I'm wondering if this is an issue with the battery?(my phone would hold a charge for maybe 4 hours before this happened? I've had the same phone and battery for 3-5 years.

Going to a department store will be really out of the way and difficult to do without a car so I want to make sure it's a good idea first.

Thanks!

The Samsung Galaxy S4 is 6.5 years old and I would normally expect battery issues after 3-4 years as a battery's life is finite and governed by lots of factors... number of charges, operating temp; etc:

In some cases, a battery can become, "loose", in it's compartment in the phone and cause intermittent shut-downs. A simple piece of sellotape/Scotch tape along the battery's base can solve this by offering a snugger fit.

In other cases, batteries can swell and will need replacing. There is a simple test for this as this video shows....

Battery is definitely swollen thank you!

The S4 model was released in early 2013, if you haven't replaced the battery since then and it's the original one it isn't surprising to have quirky problems with it at this point. There's good and bad to replacing the battery though. The good part is the S4 has a user replaceable battery so it will be really easy to swap batteries -- just remove the back cover and the battery is right there, you might be able to just use a fingernail to do the whole process. The bad part is any after-market battery you buy for a S4 will be pretty dated too. No manufacturer continues to make new batteries for really old phone models, there's no financial benefit to do so, even on a small scale. So any S4 battery you buy now will have sat in storage completely idle and not maintained for years. A smartphone battery will age quicker when in active use but they also age, at a much lessor degree, when they're not charged at least periodically (after several months or annually). Just be sure that wherever you buy your replacement battery that there's a dependable replacement/restocking policy in the event you need to go through more than battery to find an adequate one.
