Where is wallpaper stored?

drcarl

Newbie
I transferred everything from my Note 8 phone to my new Tab S5E (with the Smart Switch app)
The wallpaper from the phone (my own "aurora" image) came over to the Tab.
I want to find and save that aurora image so that I can play with other wallpapers, and be able to put the image back again if I want to.
I can't find the aurora image.

So, I'll ask, where are the wallpaper images stored? (and are they .JPGs?)
(Or, how can I download a copy of the existing wallpaper? and existing lock screen background image?)

Also, how do I set an image for the lock screen that's different from the main wallpaper?

Many thanks in advance,

Carl

there is no wallpaper folder or anything like that of that is what you are asking. you sure smart switch moved it?was your wallpaper thru an app like zedge (which i highly recommend)? was it a download? or just an image on your computer? most should be in your dcim folder some maybe on your photo or download sections.

I think the phone keeps a copy of the "current" wallpaper somewhere, rather than just using a pointer to the actual file (it seems inefficient, but the behaviour I've noticed in the past suggests this). Unfortunately I don't offhand recall where - as my current phone is not rooted it's less easy to poke around and see.

My suggestion would be to go back to the Nokia and copy the image from wherever you store it there to a folder on the Tab (since it's "your" image I assume you have a copy somewhere accessible on your phone). Then you'll be able to re-select it in future. Personally I create a folder I call "Wallpapers" and keep such things there, but that's just a convenience for me, there's nothing special about where you put it.

I'm a bit confused with your post. You say the image came over, yet cannot find it. But there is an implication that it maybe set as your wallpaper already?

Smart Switch copys exact files and folders over and is very limited too. From recollection it will only copy over files from set folders such as DCIM and Download folders. So your best bet is to use the My Files app that can be found in the Samsung folder in your apps lists and go find those folders to hunt down the missing image.

If you do already have the image set as a wallpaper there is nothing to worry about as you can simply switch it out for another wallpaper and revert back when you like.

As for your last question. When your long press on your homepage you can select your wallpapers. Simply pick the image you want as a lock screen and when prompted set it just to Lock Screen, now find a second image for your wallpaper only this time when prompted set it to your Home Page only.

The problem is that Android does make a separate copy of your current wallpaper, so it's possible that the transfer app copied that - I've met this before with other brands of phone. However this wallpaper image is store in the /data area, so not visible to the user with a file browser unless you are rooted (I couldn't remember the location but did a little searching, and it confirmed what I thought).

This is why I suggest just going back to the device it came from and copying the original file from wherever you keep it there. Plus any other images you'd like on the tablet.

A gallery app shows all images on device and also tells you the location of the images on your device. (This doesn't include google photos app)

Long press on the image in your gallery app and click on details.
