Help Emoticons not working?

So me and my fiancee started using Gboard around the same time. App is nice but my fiancee began using these neat little text emoticons like this (+_+). Except hers are more elaborate and use special characters. I don't have access to that, she has a bar above the emoticons that shows categories of others she can use. I don't have a category bar, nor can I scroll. Today I updated the app and had access to the categories and new emoticons, I sent about 4 and then poof it's gone again. I'm back to where I was before. No advanced emoticons or categories again. I uninstalled and reinstalled the app and nothing. Any help?

I only have the basic emoticon set with Gboard on a Huawei and a Samsung phone. Somebody else may know more.

I'd actually like to see more Unicode emoticons though. :-(
