Help Sending Calendar Invites between Android and iPhone?

Can anyone explain how to send calendar events (invitations) between an Android phone and an iPhone. It seems that invites I send to my wife's iPhone are not recognized as calendar events. Likewise for iPhone to Android. Is there a guide on how to make this work?

depends on the calendar you use. with the samsung calendar, i can create an event and then share it. via a calendar file or via text.
