moving photos / files off phone

I have a Samsung Galaxy S6. I have taken quite a few photos with it.

I am going to Scotland in May and want to have a lot of room to take photos there.

In the past I have moved photos from my phone to a usb thumbdrive but for the life of me I can't figure out how to do it again.

I am hoping someone can refresh my memory here and then I'll have a step-by-step that I can print out.

I would greatly appreciate a run through or a link to a run through.

I don't know how you went about the task last time. You can connect the thumb drive to your PC and then connect your phone to the PC. Both drives will show in your local browser where you can copy or move files from the phone to the thumb drive. I'm old school so I always copy my files. Once I see they are copied I then delete the copied files from the source drive. Two steps but it always gives me peace of mind.

With the proper cable, I believe you can attach a thumb drive directly to your phone. To access the thumb drive I believe will be via your notification bar. As for moving the files... I've not been there or done that but it should be doable.

Have a great time in Scotland. I'm envious.

Well, thanks for taking the time to reply.

The physical aspects of transferring the files are pretty straight-forward. I have a short cable that plugs into the micro (?) port on the bottom of my S6 and into which a regular USB male port (such as would be on a USB thumbdrive) can attach.

What I have forgotten is the internal (software) Android settings / steps (location and sequence) to transfer the photos from the gallery to the USB thumb drive. It wasn't obvious as I recall. And yes, I can play with the phone...or take it over to the Verizon dealer and get help there. But I thought someone here might be familiar and could line me out. After which I can print the instructions and have them on hand when I forget again...like in Scotland.

And thank you for the well wishes for the trip. It is a big deal for me--three weeks--and to a small degree, an 'Heritage Quest."

Your trip sounds very cool indeed! I googled up the procedure for moving your files and found some help there. You might give it a search before running to your provider. I wish I had first hand experience to lend.

Using a file manager, not gallery app, will let you transfer your files and photos easily.

If you already have a file manager/explorer, open it after plugging in your USB drive; it should recognize the drive, but if it doesn't, see if you can manually add it. Then transferring files is a simple matter of choosing their source and destination.

If your existing file manager isn't that great, here are a few that I use (all mine are paid versions): Explorer, Solid Explorer, File Manager+.

All of the above allow me to connect to my computers, and their attached drives, over my Wi-Fi network, so I'm assuming they'll recognize an attached thumb-drive.

From the file manager, navigate to the first directory whose files you want to copy. How you select them varies, but long-pressing is pretty standard. You can copy entire directories or individual files. After choosing the files, use its 'copy' function, then navigate to the USB drive and 'paste' them.

It sounds much more complicated than it actually is! If you need help, let us know. Also, just in case you're unable to copy the files directly from the phone to the drive, we can explain a 2-step process using a computer.

Git it!

My S6 comes with everything I need...

First, of course, a micro USB cable is needed (mine's 2" long), and a USB thumb drive.

Then, Apps>Tools>MyFiles>Categories>Images>Camera(etc.), select photo(s)>select the three dots, move / copy--to usb storage/photos, etc.. Done!

Works a treat.

May is the 'shoulder' season in Scotland...probably a little cool, maybe a little wet...but markedly fewer tourists. Same as in "the Highlands of Central Oregon." :)

Thanks everyone.
