Yeah I guess I'm learning about quarantine tanks.....never used then in the past, but then again I never really did any online ordering before. With the fish being expensive as they are.......it is a good idea.

ok so looks like my treatments worked.....but i did have a few losses unfortunately:(

i lossed the mloto likoma, buccochromis nototaenia, and the redtop lawanda.

i think i ended up treating over 7 fish who had or were showing signs of bloat......and three of them did not make it.....close to 50/50 i guess.

i did 50% water changes twice a week and was feeding medicated pellets every other day.

i think before what led to this was me with a faulty test kit....thinking the nitrates were lower then they were.....feeding more then i should, and also trying to vary their diet with frozen food, flake food, and pellet food. i'm gonna just stick with pellets from now on and nothing else.

also i just bought the most expensive african cichlid....it is a placidochromis phenocilus tanzania. these guys are super cool.....one of the neat things is that the males get bright blue and when they mature they get these white splotches all over their body. the one i bought is a beast at 5" and it has just started to get the white splotches.....because it takes these guys a very long time to get the splotches they tend to be expensive.....this guy set me back $101!!!!!!!!!

he is a little skittish, since i put him in.....when he calms down some i'll post some pics.

Sorry to hear about the fish. I think the pellets are better the frozen has some problems. But those pellets are the best.

Well it depends on what it is.....for most haps and peacocks.....frozen mysis shrimp is fine to feed, but not having a consistent diet is what was the main issue......gonna stick with pellets and not worry about frozen foods.

so i have some new updates:

i just bought a new fish:
mb1FGU.jpg

its a malawi barracuda. the above pic is not mine;)

now i have a trout, barracuda, and a gar.....of course these are common names and are no way related to the actual fish.

and another interesting note is that a couple of my fish bred. i have a female venustus who is carrying eggs. who is the father you ask? that is a very good question as i do not have a male venustus (i actually thought that i had one). the other interesting thing is that there is no other species that i have that is close genetically for her to breed with.

i did notice that my flametail peacock was acting very aggressive the other day to some of my fish and he was paying close attention to the venustus.....but i just thought that it was just showing dominance as the venustus can be a bully sometimes (or in this case a bitch:eek: ).

i think i am just gonna let her carry them and spit them out naturally as opposed to getting an egg tumbler and forcing the eggs out of her. i do not plan on separating her or raising the fry in a separate tank. if any of the fry survive, then good for them. i'm curious as to how the males turn out though. would be cool to see if i can guess who by how the offspring turns out.

It's almost always a mystery when a full tank breeds, and I agree that it could be fun to guess who the proud papa is. To help some of the fry survive, place a few smaller rocks on the bottom of the tank for them to hide in/around/under, some will surely survive that way. Here's to hoping for the best for the little guys :)

I agree a few rocks and plants will and should do the trick . wow where you find the bad azz barracuda at what you feeding him

yeah that is the thing.....it is not eating. hates pellets....will eat some flakes....been reading what very little is out there on this fish. it seems they are very mellow despite their menacing look. they are picky eaters and like a tank that is very calm, which my tank is not. every time i feed my guys i usually get a bit wet as they all crwod around the top of the tank for food.

the cuda usually will swim away from the crowd and hang out. he is calm and does not hide, but shows no interest in food.

i'm thinking of bring him back as i do not know what else to do.

Barracuda eats shrimps . nothing but shrimps they just like people very picky . you need to tell him this isn't buyer king you can't have it your way

well this is a malwai barracuda and in the wild they eat small fish called utaka.....not going the live fish route......so possible back to the fish store it goes as it has not eaten for weeks now.

Hope the poor fellow isn't sick hospital tank may be calling someone may have Bloat or he has

it is not bloat......i know that for sure. the fish is not hidig or acting listless like most fish who have bloat do. he does not spit out out food. he has eaten flakes before....though a very small amount. i think when he goes to look for food at the surface it is gone as my other fish are very greedy and food disappears quickly in my tank.

i think he might be wild caught and not used to eating pellets or flakes or he needs a very mellow tank with less boisterous fish.

I am looking for some and this dude on my job said he looking for some they are hard to find online order is the only way to get . he told me a dumb story . he has it in a tank with a baby turtle my face was looking like

are we talking about the same fish? or one of the other so called barracuda's? why would he do that? that turtle (most likely a red-eared slider) eats small fish.

my local fish store has them at the moment.....and you are right they are hard to find.....just finding enough info on them is just as hard. it is the main reason why i jumped on the fish when i saw it. but what little i have read, i might have made a mistake:o

Yes he said barracuda and turtle . my boss said he may have the tank divided into 2tanks . cause a turtle will eat when he is hungry. So I agree with my boss he may have a glass divider.

Wow, I want to know which devices have you used during creating this fish tank?
what are you talking about? what tank? my tank in the op?

on a side note. i should update that this tank (the one in the op) had a pretty gnarly leak and thus the tank, stand, and system has changed. as of right now, i'm re-doing the tank so it is in transition. hopefully in a few weeks i'll have it set up to how i like it. at that point i will post a picture and explained what i did.

ps.....i totally forgot about this thread.....LOL
