The starting point would be to secure your Google account (or dump it and create a new one). There's a good chance that it was the account that was originally hacked rather than the phone: otherwise the only real way they could get access to the phone would be by your installing an app that contained malware.

i would also like to add that you should set a two step verification to your google account or any account that allows you to:
