Number of messages whatsapp app

Good morning,

The Whatsapp app icon shows the number of unread messages (in my case 20) I get 1 message, only instead of showing 21 unread messages, there were always 20. I then clicked on the new message and the unread message counter remained 20. What happened? I hope I have been clear;

does it happen often? or just this once? try clearing cache for Whatsapp.
