Help Multiple sessions of the same app keep starting

On my new Power 2022, every time I open an app, e.g., the message app, a new session of it begins. Multiple icons of the app appear on my screen. Suggestions for how to avoid having multiple copies/sessions of an app every time I use it?

I'm not sure what you mean by sessions. What is this? Are we talking about multiple windows? Does this happen with all apps? Or just certain ones?
