Help ZTE Lever Android 5.1 Terrible Speech to Text Bug - Punctuation

I have been dealing with a repetitive Android/Google Keyboard Speech to Text Bug that has shut down my ability to write longer essays using voice to text while mobile. I had a ZTE Unico phone for 3 years which served to me without problem in writing countless essays while mobile through utilization of voice to text through Google Keyboard. About 2 months ago my texts to my family and readers began to be filled with the words "comma" and "exclamation point". I got complaints and people sending back my texts and documents, not knowing a thing I was trying to say.

After a couple of days of this, I figured out what was wrong. I am writing on Dragon right now flawlessly and while not perfect, Google Keyboard voice to text used to be very effective with just a little bit of solid editing to weed out the misprints where Google (which is actually Android's voice to text unit) did not understand me. I thought it was the phone at first so I switched from a ZTE Unico with an earlier android to a ZTE Lever with android 5.1. The Android/Google Keyboard Speech to Text Bug followed me and that's when I started to ask around and discovered one here, to there, were having the same problem.

In fact, on the forum there was a very helpful gentleman with an SG 4 I believe it was, who was having the Android/Google Keyboard Speech to Text Bug as rampant as my own. He adjusted on his SG 4, the speech rate which I cannot do on the ZTE Lever and his error rate went down to a level he could deal with regarding the voice to text needs he has. Great, but I cannot adjust voice to text speech rate on my phone as that is not an option and I have a much greater need for accuracy with the essays I write. I tried adjusting every possible combination of adjustments on my phone to deal with the Android/Google Keyboard Speech to Text Bug. I adjusted Enhanced Keyboard to Simple Speech Recognition, I even turned off automatic word correction and every other adjustment to no avail, including downloading Flesky keyboard app which was a neat keyboard but it still uses Google Keyboard and Android for voice to text.

For 2 months now, I have not been able to utilize voice to text for any significant writing because of the Android/Google Keyboard Speech to Text Bug. This has shut down my ability to use mobile and I can't afford another phone, which did not help the problem in the first place. If there are any android developers in this forum and any representatives of ZTE mobile phone development, I hope with all my heart that you will take notice of this simple request. Please do something to standardize the response to the word "comma" where the default response on our mobile phones is the punctuation mark "," and NOT the word spelled out "comma". There are even times when it sets the proper punctuation mark in place and as I continue to speak it switches the punctuation mark, which is absolutely correct, to the word "comma" spelled out! Every time I say that word, it is spelled out without exception. It seems like a very simple fix and if I could do it I would, but that is not my realm of expertise.

The other people I have spoken to who have the problem are not writers who compose extensive essays and so they just try to deal with it. I do not have that luxury. In the initial malfunction symptoms of the Android/Google Keyboard Speech to Text Bug, the verbal prompt I had used for years, "exclamation point", was spelled out every time I wanted to set the punctuation in place that these words represent, "!". I never get the correct punctuation when saying "exclamation point" but simply the words spelled out. I read extensively about this issue and one guy switched to "exclamation mark" instead and it began to actually put the punctuation in place and this is currently working for me most of the time so "comma" being spelled out each and every time is my final and completely debilitating issue with the Android/Google Keyboard Speech to Text Bug.

Is there anyone out there who can develop a fix for this issue for us who got hit with it??

I finally have someone who is experiencing the same problem, it has become very bad. Everytime I try to use my phone for sending a text, the phone will replace or simply right the word "comma" almost every time. I have tried to find help with the ZTE help line but they say it is the software and it just needs an update. I have no idea what they are talking about because my phone constantly updates and I think they are just avoiding the problem. I sent a help email to Google and even chatted with a Google help person but this chatted with a Google help person but this only ended in them saying that they would send the feedback to the right Google section. It is very frustrating to have this happen every time I try to send a text or search for something. I hope someone can help .

Hello TS, sorry it took so long to respond. Please understand that I empathize completely with your plight. I have tried myself, getting in touch with ZTE to explain that I just purchased a new ZTE lever phone from straight talk and had never had any problem with punctuation being recognized until my ZTE Unico started to spell out the word "comma" INCESSANTLY. I bought the new ZTE lever thinking I could get rid of the problem but to no avail . When I called ZTE The guy on the phone said he was sorry and that it was probably because the phone needed an update to Google voice to text or some other app. I then called Google and they simply said they would take it down as feedback! I continue to try to adjust settings. Another guy who has a SG4 was having the same problems and he thought he fixed it when he changed the speed at which voice to text is programmed to hear and interpret what we say. What he didn't realize is that he was looking at text to speech settings and have done nothing for the speech to text. He had kept telling me to change that option for voice to text, that he was Finding but there was none for voice to text it was for text to speech. This problem is so rampant that it has shut me down and I can't use my phone for writing anymore, the longer treatises that I write or used to, using my phone.
My neighbor has an SG 3 with Android and she has started typing her texts instead. This all started coming up on a month and a half to two months ago. I don't know what Google or Android changed to cause this whole riffic bug but it seems like there would be an easy fix to change the algorithm by which the voice to text recognizes the word "comma". It should 99.9% of the time he recognized as the punctuation mark!

Are there any Developers that can give remedy to this?

I have asked around and this issue of the word "comma" being the default response to the spoken word has infected many ZTE lever owners and an increasing number of Samsung Galaxy users. There are not many of us who are writers and so they believe they must deal with the issue through sheer frustration and attempts at persevering through teaching their recipients to reinterpret the word, or name as we have not figured out what Google voice typing using Android means yet "Kama" (I just said "comma") by the word "Kama" (said "comma" again!). I have gone back and put quotation marks around the suspected name "Kama" that comes up if the actual word itself "comma" does not appear at the verbalization of the punctuation mark. I no longer have hope that the actual punctuation mark will come up because it is a moot point . I just want to warn you people who are potentially purchasing the ZTE lever "Kama" the ZTE Unico "comma" or the Samsung Galaxy mobile systems ... be it a phone or tablet. Anything using Android 4 in the late versions and subsequent versions of Android are susceptible to the Google voice to text or Google voice typing through Android bug. If you intend to compose any cognizant composition 2 any individual with a competent discernment of vocabulary and grammar... The message and essay output of the Google voice typing using Android 4 and later on these devices is pathetic and these devices should be avoided at all costs because you are playing Russian roulette with the function of the app that you will use probably most often above all others in communicating with friends and... not to mention those of us who use it to compose actual documents or used to anyway. I repeat... You are taking a big chance in purchasing Samsung Galaxy or ZTE lever phones if your objective is any substantive composition of treatise or Communications of substance to other people.

Punctuation is an essential aspect of accurate speech recognition, and it's frustrating when it doesn't work correctly. Have you tried updating your device's software to the latest version? This might help address the issue as software updates often include bug fixes and improvements. Additionally, you can try using third-party speech-to-text apps from the Google Play Store as alternative options.
