1 acre DynaTrap. My last one died in 2022 and this is the first year since then that I've had mosquitos in the yard. No chemicals, just leave it on and enjoy a blood sucking insect free yard.
Tell me more.... PLEASE! I go through more than a can of spray deep woods a week and they still try to take a leg off!
I bought my first one about 10 years ago or so after a ton of research. We had a breakout of Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE or Triple E), so bad they were cancelling sports and outdoor activities at dusk. I did a ton of research which for this discussion resulted in two conclusions.
1) Mosquitoes are extremely local, like, within a couple hundred feet. If you break the breeding cycle, which takes 90 days or so, it takes a long time for them to reestablish a population in that area. Hence, my old one broke in the fall of 2022 and I didn't have blood thirsty insects (it works on all biting insects) until the spring of 2025, so 2+ years for mosquitoes to reclaim my yard.
2) The methodology employed was used by the National Parks Service, but used a different technology. They used propane to generate the Co2 attraction, where this uses UV light that interacts with the aluminum casing. The gist of it is, UV light and Co2 attract the biting insects, a fan blows them into a chamber where they get trapped and die of whatever, starvation or dehydration.
I tried it and damned if after 6 weeks there were no mosquitoes. The new ones are both cheaper ($90 vs $200) and use LED lights instead of fluorescent, so they should be cheaper to run and less consumables.
This is the one I have coming.

Thanks for the breakdown. I'll be a consumer. My neighbor has always kept his yard extremely wet and it has become a breeding ground. This year nature has added to the cause. The fact is that they are bad about town and I'm in the grass at least three hours a day. They are far worse here at my home. You can't step outside without some protection or you will receive multiple bites. There is no sitting outside... you might lose a leg. Thanks for the info!

We have ours not too wet, just rain wet because of the massive garden and farm grounds, yeah the bugs are really nasty, the worst is getting tick bites so far...

After some time with the new and improved... does it work as well as the old model? I haven't ordered yet so I'm asking. Even the positive reviews hint that its a great bug killer but not so much mosquitos.
I've only had it running for about two weeks, and IIRC it takes 90 days to break the breeding cycle for mosquitos. The basket is about half full now so it is collecting plenty. I'll try to remember to dump it tonight and observe how prevalent the mosquitos are. I have noticed different behavior on the mommy mosquitos (that's what we call the big ones), mostly being places they aren't normally, so perhaps things are getting messed up in their ecosystem.
It's getting late in the season for mosquitos here. The rains have elongated their active window or they would not be a problem. I'm not sure I need one for this year. The wife is convinced I don't

I ordered a replacement UPS/surge protector today. I run three here in the office and the oldest one winked out after a surge this morning. I've replaced the batteries in it a couple of times it's so old. The power rest button is broken. You have to take the front off of it to reset it if it kicks off. It's time to move on. I ordered a CyberPower CP1500

The one I retired and the two still in service were all the same model. Basically the same size as the ordered replacement. The difference being the old are laying down and the new is standing up.

Ah cool olbriar.
I have a couple of Cyberpowers, I like 'em but they don't tell you when their batteries are dead. You find out the hard way.
It's also the case with the unit it's replacing. The batteries are cheap enough and I normally keep spares being as I have other units. I wasn't diligent and have no spare batteries. With the reset button trashed, I decided it was time to move on. New batteries will likely bring it up to speed. I'm gifting the dead UPS to a friend. He can buy replacement batteries and will likely fix the broken switch.
Aside from the the dead battery surprise thing, they're more efficient than other UPS's as they don't run the inverter when on standby.
While I understand the reasoning about keeping spare batteries on hand, if you don't keep them charged they will go bad just sitting around.
