Big postholiday blowout

Last night a light stopped working. After investigating I discovered a circuit breaker not headed in the right direction. I tried to reset it but it's being stubborn.

If a breaker trips as you are trying to reset it, there is likely a short somewhere in that circuit or too much demand. Breakers that are tripped often can lose the ability to be reset but that doesn't sound like your problem. I suggest investigating to find the culprit. Circuit breakers are there to protect you and your property.

i always check the breaker by sticking my tongue to it. is that the wrong way to go about it?

Obvious question: did you replace the light before attempting to reset?

But TBH if you can't reset it then it's likely the problem isn't the bulb. I'd check the switch for shorts first, just because it's the simplest and most accessible thing in the circuit. Then the light fixture. But damage anywhere in the circuit can do this, e.g. if a rodent got into the wall or ceiling and chewed a wire that could produce a short - hopefully it's nothing like that though.

Maybe I just wasn't patient enough. The next morning there were two orange lights and the switch on the wall worked just fine. I expected it to be quicker.

Yeah whenever that was, our big breaker quit on us one random day, so my mother's boyfriend is a part time farmer for us, he does mostly electrical stuff, so he was able to switch it on and off for us. That was a bit ago.
