If I root my Samsung Epic will I still receive updates that I normally would if I didnt root my phone like gingerbread for example or would that completely negate the point of rooting a phone??

So about a week ago my phone stopped connecting to my laptop... it still charges but thats it... no notification comes up that asks if i want to charge my phone or mount it... I tried doing a hard reset and that didnt work... any suggestions???

Ok so I installed the 2.2 update for the epic thinking it was the final version... found out it wasn't the official update now I'm trying to get rid of it and go back to stock... will I need to root my phone in order to do that? And how would I go back to stock?
