Can anyone tell me why my phones keeps giving me 'insufficient memory' message when I try to do some updates, yet I have over 100mb+ available space on my device?

My phone barely makes it 8 hours before it shuts down, thats very poor battery life since im coming from Blackberry that could go for entire day without a problem. Also is this common thing for OS?
