The article points out that the charm is a free knick-knack. In fact, those are quite popular in Asia, and in many Taiwan pubs the sales squads visit and hand them out as promotional items. They're free, they're fun and they light up to let you know that your phone is ringing, ideal for a noisy environment.
Our smartphones tend to not even feature a lanyard post to use such goodies any more.
I just realized how odd that is, given that I am using a Taiwanese smartphone, and that my old flip and feature phones had such a post.
