1st Impressions of the Rezound . . .

Went to the Verizon store on Saturday evening to upgrade my wife's old flip phone for a more up to date Verizon feature phone. My wife is not too tech savy so why go with a smartphone for her if she won't use its features.

As it turns out Verizon did not have the phone that I wanted for her in the store. Online only. That would not do at all so I asked the sales rep about the Rezound.

Got my hands on the thing, despite the rep trying to stear me to the Google Nexus or whatever you call it. I complained about all the VZW bloatware and he said that one did not have any on it.

Back to the Rezound. I have had a DINC for almost 2 years and have fallen in love with it. So it was with some trepidation that I decided that the wife was going to get a smartphone after all - my DINC.

So got the Rezound, the extended battery, screen protector, silicone case from VZW.

After 2 days of loading apps and getting it set up here are my impressions.

Screen Size: The larger screen is really nice for viewing pix of my grand daugher. But would not want one much bigger. Grade A

Exterior Size: With the EB this phone is big and fat. Much bigger than the DINC with the EB. I like the extra thickness and also the curvature of the back of the phone. Fits very nicely in my hands. Some with smaller hands like my wife might have a slight problem though. I carry it in my murse most of the time, but this morning I went out for few minutes and just slid it into the pocket of my sweat pants with no problem at all. Grade B

Weight: The Rezound weighs a lot more than the DINC but not enough to cause any problems for me. My first candy bar style cell phones weighed even more. Wish it was a bit lighter cause it feels sometimes like I am holding a "brick" in my hand. Grade B

UI: Did not like the Sense UI compared to Launcher Pro on the DINC. So I put the LP on it. Now it works just fine. May try one of the other lauchers out there just to compare it with LP. Using Sense it gets a Grade B-

Battery Life: To early to tell how this will turn out. I am not a power user so I was able to get about 2 days out of my DINC EB. Have to wait a few weeks and several charges to see how the EB works. I did purchase a third-party charger for the DINC that allowed me to keep the stock battery charged and I did carry it as a spare to switch out if for some reason I did become a power user for a day or forgot to put the DINC on the charger. Plan on doing the same with the Rezound. Not thrilled with charger/sync cable provided. HTC provided a plug that can go into an electrical outlet for the sync cable to plug into and thus serve as a charging cable. Too easy to loose the plug. Looks like I get another sync cable to keep with my computer. Grade TBD.

Accessories - Screen Protector:
Just as I did with my DINC I got my screen protector and silicone case from VZW. The screen protector shows every finger print and became what I would call smeared with them after just an hour or so of installing apps. Did not cause in problems with seeing the stuff on the screen. I am sure that there are better ones out there on the market but for convenience sake I got the VZW protectors. Grade C because of the finger marks.

Accessories - Silicone Gel Cover: The case is another thing. Very difficult to get on and off. There seems to be no "stretch" to it so it does not go back on the phone after I take it off to switch out the batteries. In addition the case does not allow easy access to the power button or the volume rocker controls. The case itself does provide a good not slip grip on the phone but it adds a good bit of thickness. Considering going "necked" wth the Rezound as I did that sort of thing with my DINC but cutting out the back of the DINC Gel cover to fit the EB. Grade C-

Overall Opinion: Very nice phone from a manufacturer with whom I have had a great experience. This phone allows me to switch out the battery and also upgrade the mUSB card if I want. Those are plus features.

The overall thickness and weight are a concern especially in these days of "thin" and "light". But the extra weight and thickness gives the impression that you are holding a "quality" phone in your hands. Like my DINC the battery life is not all that great thus the EB. I dropped my DINC a couple times with no problems and I feel that I can get the same durability from my Rezound that maybe I would not get from its competitors. I suggest that you look elsewhere for screen protectors and a case/cover.

The crazy plug and sync cable way of charging the phone is a negative to me. Need to buy an extra syc cable to keep near my computer for transferring pix to the mSD card. Also a problem when traveling, too easy to lose the plug.

But at $199 it was $100 cheaper than the competition and that helped me overlook the weight and thickness issues. Overall Grade B.

While not the "perfect" smartphone the Rezound meets my needs better than the comparable phones.

I think this is a pretty good review and a fair call. Just FYI, I got the extended battery and this case/holster from VZ and love them. The kickstand is nice. The Amazon price is better than I got at Big Red, $10 cheaper.

I find this interesting as I'm a former DInc user who moved to the DInc2 and am now considering the Rezound. How you got 2 days out of the DInc is beyond me? I got 5-6 hours. The battery life on that phone sucked though I loved it otherwise. I get 9-10 hours + out of the DInc 2. Is there anything about the phone that you hate? I'm looking for cons as well as pros.
