Root 2.2.1 ~ Rooting and upgrading?

Upgrading and rooting are totally different things. Rooting will not upgrade your firmware.
That guide is for rooting phones running 2.3 firmware, you cannot use that on on 2.2. You need to upgrade to 2.3 if you want to use that.

upgrading from 2.2.1 to what? official or custom?

my everyday phone is a galaxy note 1 running 4.1.2 (ya, i know it could be better)
as for the S5830, it would more pleasing on my eyes if it were more like my note, but i want it to me great battery life, fast, and smoothe.

upgrade to 2.3.3, or something else?

suggestions?

Official or custom, you still need GB to use that link. :D
You can root froyo but for that you will need superoneclick. Then its upto you, flash whatever you need. I would suggest CM7 roms if you are looking for performance. Look for Nitrogen or Ultimatum rom on XDA.

ok, lets say i want to flash this ROM onto my phone, how do it do it?

either tell me how to do it, or point me in the correct direction.

thanks

Surely if you connect your Ace to kies via a laptop or pc it will upgrade you to 2.3.3 or above anyway. 2.2.1 is so old now.

You cannot install a custom rom without having root access. :smokingsomb:

First of all get it rooted, either from 2.2 or 2.3, choice is yours.(Section Da or Db)

Second, install a custom recovery like ClockWorkMod(CWM5). Don't use ROM MANAGER to flash CWM. Flash it manually through a zip file.
Flash the custom rom of your choice via the CWM.

Now i am not sure if you can flash a 4.0 rom over a 2.2 firmware, confirm with the rom dev if its possible, otherwise i would suggest that you upgrade first.(section C of the tutorial above)

And the ICS Final although a good rom is almost a year old, you have better options available, check XDA.
