Help 2.2.1

Newbie
Hi, I'm a total noob and was wondering If I could bother someone for help?
I'm on t mobile on the uk and they're taking the piss with releasing this update. I was wondering if there was a total newb friendly way of unlocking my phone? I've looked at some guides online and I get lost quite quickly and I don't fancy bricking my phone

Any help would be warmly welcomed

Is your handset branded? I am on t-mobile as well but I got the phone through Carphone Warehouse so it's unbranded and not network specific, and if yours is the same then 2.2.1 is available already.

I bought it from t mobile themselves

How would I go about checking it's unlocked? When I plug it in to kies it's now coming up with an available update, but when the progress bar gets to 100% it says it's failed due to unknown error

Easiest way I guess is to try another network sim card in it and see if it works. Also does it have any T-Mobile logos or branding when you turn it on?

Try this:
Tap on the phone icon and enter *#7465625# as if you were dialling a number.
If network lock is on then your locked to the network. If all locks are OFF then your good to go.

Network lock is on. So that's that confirmed!

Who can help me debrand it then?

You will need to get it unlocked before you can do anything.
I tried to to flash new firmware to a friends over the weekend and because it is network locked, it didn't work.

You can ask your network for an unlock code, they will need your IMEI number. *#06# will give you your IMEI.
Don't be supprised if they say you will have to speak to samsung.

I might try that, or at least put the feelers out to see how much it'd cost me.

If I were to deem the cost too much, what other methods could I do?

Thanks for all the help so far by the way

If you ask your network for the unlock code it is free as far as I know.

As cristush says, you can try the GalaxyS unlock from the market. I have heard varying comments on it, ranging from rubbish to very good.
You will need to root your phone first though.

What firmware are you on? you can find out by doing this:
Tap phone icon and enter *#1234# as if you are dialling a phone number.
You will have Phone, PDA, CSC and build Info write them all down and post it here.
Some roots work better with certain firmwares.

This is all the info that comes up:

PDA I9000BOJPB

PHONE: I9000BOJP3

CSC I9000GTMUJP5

BUILD INFO 2010.11

useful?

Yep, The TM in the CSC is T-mobile. So what it means is the JPB, JP3 and the JP5 is network specific firmware.

First thing to do is root the phone. I would suggest following this

How to Root Samsung Galaxy S i9000 Android 2.1 Eclair, 2.2 Froyo. Some members at forum-xda have developed a windows tool which can root Samsung Galaxy S i9000 in one click. This tool works for 2.1 Eclair and 2.2 Froyo and guess what? It can even unroot your Samsung Galaxy S back to its original firmware, but that works only for 2.1 Eclair.

Oneclickroot tool can be found over at XDA Developers site.
Root Samsung Galaxy S i9000

  1. Download One click root tool for SGS GT-I9000
  2. Download Dot net framework v4 if you don
