Root 2.2 may be near

So the acclaim, which is basically us cellulars version of the moment got froyo. The good folk over at sdx have stated that it would not be too rough to port it for our phones. I don't wanna get my hopes up but I'm sorta kinda excited

So why does this moment clone called the acclaim get 2.2 and our moments don't? I'm sorry I guess I'm still bitter. I since moved onto LG Optimus S with 2.2 out of the box. I really hope this gets ported over soon to the moment because I still use my moment for work. The moment still has a very good keyboard but lags way too much. I'm willing to root again for a 2.2 port.

The reason why the Moment will not get 2.2 is because it is the biggest piece of **** phone that Sprint has released. They want it to disappear. They removed it from everything that they could and are replacing them with other crap phones instead of upgrading customers like they deserve. Long story short, the Moment is just junk, they know it's junk and just want to sever all ties.

Don't think it has anything to do with the quality of the phone and more to do with Sprint and Samsung both wanting customers to purchase new phones. There have been several articles written in the last week about Samsung being near the bottom of manufacturers who keep their phones up-to-date with the latest version of Android and Sprint wants everyone to buy a 4G phone so they can charge them an extra $10 a month.

I disagree to an extent. Yes they want you to buy new phones, blah blah, but look at the Hero. The Hero, although it won't be getting official 2.2, is still being sold by Sprint, where the Moment is not, they have removed the Moment because it is defective, that is the MAIN reason that it will not be getting 2.2.

The same reports that had Samsung near the worst manufacturer for updating their Android devices all had HTC as the best.

I don't doubt that Sprint could get Samsung to update.the Moment if they really wanted it updated, but Samsung has to take a lot of the blame since they now have a pattern of not updating Android as much as other phone manufacturers.

Still no word at SDX, guess they ran into some complications. I figure it will take a few weeks to get a stable version anyway. I think Sprint and Samsung are both to blame for the Moment. The product was rushed to market with essentially beta software then loaded with bloatware. It also seems that some corners were cut in manufacturing on various batches of phones.

Several days ago I went back to rooted stock DJ07 with stock kernel and stripped it down. Its running just as good as any rom if not better once all the crapware and excess software is out. It seems like I ran into multiple issues with every rom or got random glitches etc..

So the dev at SDX posted a giant locked sticky yesterday about how everybody needs to quit asking about 2.2 and nobody is entitled to it, and he doesn't have to tell anybody how the process is going blah blah. Originally the guy said it would be childs play and ready in 24 hours but when people started talking about it or asking for updates he got all pissy.

From what I've read it looks like the kernel has to be rewritten among other things so we are likely looking at weeks or maybe even months?

yeah, that's why i didn't wanna get my hopes up just yet.

The Hero has updates because it's manufactured by HTC. Bottom line, just don't ever buy a Samsung phone again, period. They have shown that they are the worst when it comes to support and customer care. I don't own one (Thank God), but I've got a friend with the Moment (which is why I'm on here, trying to get it rooted and a custom ROM on it for her), and another friend with the Epic 4G. Both are somehow still on Android 2.1, which is absolutely unacceptable considering FroYo has been out for well over 6 months now. I hope this news of 2.2 coming to the Moment soon is true, as that will really help a lot of people.

You must be new to sprint or something... I've had waaaaaay worse phones than the moment in the past from sprint that were supposed to be great phones.

i been with sprint for 9 years and all of my phones i owned had issues but never as much as the moment. the main major issue that was wrong with it was the data lockups. i threw my phone many times because of it. thankfully this was solved in the latest update which took one year to fix. its sad when i think about swapping back to my old wm6.1 phone which btw worked how it should except for the occasionally battery pull when the phone locks which is rare.

They used different hardware in the acclaim and there is a working beta at this time. We have someone working on the kernal as well as someone else working on the sysdump to get it working. Visit here to read more and test it out for your self!

Moment - 2.2 Development

This is more than anyone has done to help so please give credit where its due and if you have the knowledge to fix any of the bugs please post them in the appropriate thread.

I noticed that went up this weekend, looks like people are getting mostly good results. Personally I will wait a little longer because if I brick my moment I have to pull an old Samsung clamshell from 2005 out of retirement.

I can vouch for amazing results. Battery life is about 1.5x better so far and the phone is smooth. Not jittery really responsive and they already have a couple items fixed. Waiting on the accelerometer and GPS working along with a few more small things. This is easily a daily driver option for anyone.

don't know why people think the acclaim is the same phone as the moment.
it has some similar features, but that's it. It is, in fact, a totally different phone.

Don't know why so many people got their panties in such a bunch about the whole "what's taking so long to get 2.2" If I was the Dev. I'd be pissed about it to. Not like these people are making any money doing this.

The Moment has had hardware problems since the get go. Samsung and Sprint have both released several updates attempting to patch over the hardware problems. They new it was a doomed phone within the first fiscal quarter of the phone being released. They have lost a huge amount of money to replacement phones because of errors that shouldn't have ever been made. But think about when that phone came out... Sprint NEEDED a droid with a key board. Prior to this phone, what else was there, the Hero. Sprint spent so much time and money trying to invest in smart phones like the Instinct and the Palm Pre, that they ended up behind the curve when android became the big thing. It has nothing to do with Samsung's quality and or their customer service. They were pushed to release a phone that was still several months away from the scheduled release because Sprint needed it now. Sprint had to make an attempt to make up some losses from the instinct and the Pre, so they filled the phone with bloatware, hoping that, that would generate some more income. Look at all of the phones that were released in that time frame, from every carrier, they were all full of bloatware. They didn't realize that people were going to try to use these devices in the ways they do today. The old school phones were full of bloatware stuff, and people used it. and that was it. Now, they had these phones with 2, 3, 4, even 5 times the capabilities so they figured they could handle the bloatware.
So the bloatware argument is Null. Every phone has it. The early android phones had it worse.
Samsung being crap is Null. What would you have rather them do? spend a ton of money to redesign the phone, put it through testing, then hand them out to everyone who bought the first version, all while taking a huge loss? That would have resulted in Samsung going broke. OR, the moment being a 500+ dollar phone. Both Sprint and Samsung took a gamble, and they lost. Shit happens.
Both neither Sprint, or Samsung had to replace anywhere near as many phones as they did. They were attempting to make things right with their customers. Ever notice how the Sprint reps always tried to get you into a different phone when you bitched about your Moment? Both Sprint and Samsung were trying to get people into something different to fix the problem. Hell, even the latest Dj07 update was released after the phone had been officially pulled from shelves. A carrier and manufacturer still supporting a phone after it had officially died is unheard of.
So step back and realize just what it is that you are bitching about when you start to complain about how crappy the moment is and how much samsung sucks.
Seems to me that you are pissed off that you bought a phone that wasn't ready yet when you should have been buying something else. Who's fault is that?
If the moment wasn't such a hit right out of the gate, then I would get that it would have been pulled much sooner and replaced with something else, much quicker.

K... I'll end my rant now.

@ 240phil: Really? Some of your points I understand, but blaming the buyer? When I went into the Sprint store the rep didn't tell me, "This phone is essentially a beta build with faulty hardware. Use it at your own risk." You said yourself that Sprint and Samsung rushed it out early, so who's fault is it again? Also, most people had their Moments replaced 4 or 5 times before being offered a different (lesser, but more stable) phone as a replacement. Not the best way to "make things right".

I hope you're "lucky" like me, and have a Moment that only gets data lockup after using wifi. Otherwise, good luck if you ever need to wait 2 minutes for a reboot during an emergency. Oh, and a functional GPS so EMS crews can actually locate you.

Back onto the 2.2 topic: I think I may migrate over early next week.
