Hi. I just got a new phone, Sharp-Softbank 007SH with 2.3.3 android and I hate it's default SMS app! I can send SMS from other apps just fine but every SMS I receive only goes to the default app. Does anyone know how I could change it?

A received message should be visible in any SMS app, since they all use the system database for storing messages (Handcent, Chomp, Textra, etc all work this way). If you can't see the received messages when you open the 3rd party app please post again to tell us what apps so we can try to work it out (registration required, but it's free).

However, you will only receive notifications if you have enabled them in the app, so if you just install a new app but don't change the settings you may well only get the notifications from the old app when messages arrive. So if you want to use a different app, go into that app's settings and enable (and customise) notifications there. Then go into the stock app's settings and turn off its notifications so that you don't get notifications from both.

I hope that answers the question, but please let us know if not.

Somehow the default Softbank mail app hoarded all the messages to itself and I couldn't see them in other apps at all!

I finally solved it by learning what launchers are and upgrading to a better one, and at the same time picking up Chomp SMS from play store. New launcher + Chomp now works like a charm :)

Not a moment too soon, I was so close to throwing the phone out my window :D

OK, that is odd - only explanation I can think of is the default app wasn't using the standard system database (possible if the default app was a carrier app rather than the standard Android or manufacturer app, I guess).

Anyway, glad it's working :)

Yeah your guess is spot on. It's a Japanese phone and they have two main carriers there, Docomo and Softbank. Both of these carriers buy phones from Sharp and modify them for their own tastes. And the default mailing app is Softbank's own software.

I don't know much of these Android phones so when I bought the phone I thought it would be very similar to my old Samsung X-cover :P Guess this is one way of learning new things but I'm sure as hell gonna do a lot more research the next time I buy a new phone! I just had to have this model, it's one of the very few existing Android clam phones!
