2.7 gb mpg4 not playable/convert on pc

Hi all

Im a bit desperate by now, made a video recording on my Galaxy s2 but I cant do anything with it on pc.

No matter what program i try to import it to it wont work, i tried lots of different editors ie. Vegas pro, AVS, Xilisoft etc.

The time of the recording is 36 min.

It plays fine on the galaxy but it cant be imported to any program to reduce filesize, and accordingly edited?

I really need to get this movie to work, any advice is much apriciated.

Will it PLAY on the PC with say .. VLC?

You probably need a CODEC on your PC to interpret the file. Your phone uses 3GP4 format I believe ... Knowing that, Google "convert 3GP4" and you'll find tools that specifically address that type of file.

No it wont, but other videos made at allmost the same time, will? the only one is the 2.7 gb. and it plays fine on the Galaxy s2??

I have tried to copying it to the pc several times in order to check that it wasnt damaged while copied...
 
Did you specifically try VLC? The beauty of it is that it does NOT require codecs to playback odd video. Anything that is preinstalled on your system (like Windows Media Player) isn't going to cut it.

I don't see a codec around (this would enable Windows Media Player the ability to play it), but this tool says it can convert it. Try the demo!
 
thx - But i did try VLC and FoxReal. none works? Strange it can play on the Galaxy but nowhere else??? I even tried an app to trim directly on the phone. the films plays, the trim starts, but nothing happens, had it on all night waiting for the trimming to stop, but this morning it was still trimming....wont work either?

Hmmmm. I think the file size could be an issue.

There is controversy on the spec, but 32 bit addressing limits the file to 4 GB, half that if they use signed integer - and at 2.7 GB, maybe something is confused on transfer.

You can long press on the file on your phone using Astro File Manager or EStrongs File Explorer to get file details including a checksum.

You can find pc checksum software, and compare the numbers to ensure a good transfer.

Start with the little things, I often say. :)
 
That's an interesting theory, EarlyMon ... I wonder, though, if a "loosey goosey" player like VLC wouldn't try to play it anyway... at least the first 2GB. It will play broken as hell AVIs ...

Checksum is a fast easy method though.

There is something very strange about that file, it can play on the Galazy, but only play, if I try to open it with any other app than the defaultplayer it wont work, I have tried so many different vid trimmers and vid editors, and it just wont do it?

Other movies made at allmost the same time, but smaller in size plays fine on both my Galazy, my 32 and my 64 bit pc
 
Yeah, I think the deal is all about the size boundary at 2 GB. That's a normal file size limit in Android for the SD card (addressing with signed integers). But - the SD spec says 4 GB (unsigned 32-bit integer addressing) and I think the Samsung camera and media player somehow have their own way of dealing with that.

So, it could very easily be a file transfer problem - even if it says same number of bytes on your PC after transfer, I really wonder what was gathered after that 2 GB fence hit - hence, the checksum idea.

A sneaky alternative - almost a Hail Mary play, really (if you're into football) - would be to install SwiFTP and do the _long_ transfer to your PC via FTP. Absolutely no guarantees on that.

ftp did it, well the transfer anyhow, gotta see if it can be handled/edited on the 32 bit pc now......

Well done! Nice to have another problem solved.

I'm using File Expert right now (I used to use SwiFTP) because in addition to being a great file manager, it has "CONTENT SHARING" built in including web and FTP based. Super easy to use and fast as hell too.

In fact, it's fast enough I don't ever use a cable to transfer anything anymore.
