*228 for updating roaming necessary with SIM cards?

With my previous Dinc, and with my traveling for work, Verizon support said it would be a good idea to hit *228 to update roaming in the new city. He also said it isn't a bad idea to do it monthly no matter what, as their networks, etc. are always expanding, updating...

But with my new Razr Maxx, I do that and it says the SIM card has activated your service and updated your phone's roaming capabilities.

Fine, but it doesn't give me the same feeling as my previous phone, with dialing, and programming, etc.

Is it even necessary with SIM cards now?

UPDATE; Sorry, my original search didn't turn up anything, but I Googled it and got this link from these forums:

I don't have a Nexus, but it generally answered my question. Sorry for the new thread!

When I attempt to do *228 or *22899 it says the following "A Verizon Wireless SIM card has activated your service and updated your phone's roaming capabilities"
