2gb ram vs quad core and benchmark thread

US Samsung Galaxy S3 may be getting 2GB RAM with its 1.5GHz dual-core, is it better than the international version with 1GB RAM and 1.4GHz quad-core?

I will be getting the international version as have no choice, just wondering what you think is better?

I think there's pro's and cons to both. Even though The quad core beats the dual core in benchmarks, multitasking will be better with 2GB of ram. The dual core runs a lot cooler. Battery life is about the same considering you (quad) can idle on just one core.

Graphic intense games is really where the quad will shine. In everyday use there shouldn't be a noticeable difference.

Im wondering if the 2gb of RAM should help with keeping it cool as well? Also im sure the 2gb of RAM should help with gaming slightly as well.

To me the international version beats the us version hands down. The CPU is better, also the gpu is also better in the international version from what I've read which means it would be better for intensive games . So what the us has 2gb ram. Anything over 1gb is really just fluff not needed for the most part. I've never used up the whole 1gb ram on my nexus. Now that 1gb ram is standard they need to improve the ram not the quantity of ram. Just my 2cents

Your Nexus isn't filled with bloat or a touch wiz interface. The extra ram will come in quite handy. Especially buffering 1080p videos.

I don't see the US version being any noticeably slower than the international. The S4 seems to do fine against the Quad Core Samsung chipset.

Attached you'll see my results. Didn't turn off everything to make my scores look better. This is excatly how I run my phone and all the programs in the back. Nothng here is sugarcoated.

First two pics are antutu and quadrant benchmarks. Last photo is my screen with everything running during both benchmarks. I'm sure if you have it in like new condition and nothing running, it would be faster. These resultsseem realistic given eveything I had running.

I have been told by a developer friend of mine that the US version having 2gig needs this as some of its hardware has been cut back like graphics is lacking in RAM so this may be shared like with on-board PC cards, I don't know the exact details but it sounded plausible.

Benchmarks of the GPU Have shown to be higher on the USA verison.....but your right the CPU is slightly higher on the international version.

Your kidding right? The Mali 400 GPU in the Galaxy S3 blows away Adreno 225, it's not even close.

Adreno 225 is more comparable to the first generation Mali 400 in the Galaxy S2.

I look at it this way- The S4 dual is faster in almost all aspects than the Tegra 3, with better battery life and less heat . The Tegra 3 does super fine in my TF300, so I am good.

Also, for game emulators, the S4 will be faster than the Sammy quad, so I am even mo' better. :)

Ditto on Flash performance, based on an Anandtech comparison. I will not be playing mega ultimate complex 3d games that I may or may not notice a difference on a small display (compared to a tablet).

IMO, the S4 its a better fit for a phone, based on my use.

The exynos quad still uses the older cortex A9 architecture. The snapdragon S4 is using newer cortex Krait architecture.

Krait Processor

A lot of people blindly look at "QUAD" being more than "DUAL" but don't even understand the differences in the core architectures. If you look at the performance of the dual core Krait, it is definitely no slouch:

Performance of the newer Krait architecture

"If you want to abstract by one more level: Krait will be faster regardless of application, regardless of usage model. You're looking at a generational gap in architecture here, not simply a clock bump."

Agreed on the Krait architecture. But many folks think it's not true A15 architecture that upcoming Exynos 5 and OMAP5 series will have. So it's probably not delivering the true A15 performance.

Despite being A9 based, 32nm Exynos 4 quad seems to do best in quadrant, browser and GLbench. S4 is surely no slouch but Exynos quad is the fastest one right now it seems.

I think it's actually pretty clear, for 3d gaming, the Internation version will be faster. For everything else, the US version will be the better option. While the CPU may be slightly slower/faster in various benchmarks, it is more efficient so you'll get better battery life.

You also have to think about software coding. Developers code for the middle/low end, so while you will have the CAPABILITY for better graphics, most games will be coded for performance comparable or even less than the US version, so it won't make a big difference. With everyone moving to A15 based CPU cores in the future, it's likely we'll see more optimization for that architecture as well, which may help for video playback/encoding programs, etc.

Keep in mind, Windows Phone 8 is going to standardize on the same processor found in the US Galaxy S3, so I'd expect alot of software to be coded for the Adreno 225.

Honest question: is there anything that actually uses 4 cores? Isn't it a case of 1 faster core is better than 4 slower cores for most applications out there?

Guys I hope you're showing your US version and not the International version.. I just got my US Galaxy S3 today and I can't seem to beat 3500 on Quadrant. Guess the Dual Core really isn't anywhere near as fast as the quad core. Disappointing.

On my US version doing a Quadrant benchmark test I can't seem to get any higher than 3500 for a score. I've seen videos of the Galaxy S3 doing 5-6000 on Quadrant. Must have been the international version :(
