Help 2x Facebook, 2x Maps apps etc running

Newbie, so be kind.

I hate things on the phone that aren't needed, that could potentially slow it down.

On my Sensation, in Manage Applications/ Running, I have running...
Calender
Calender
Maps
Maps

Can I stop one of these?

Don't worry about the apps that are listed as 'running' it is a very misleading description given to them. Android is very efficient at memory management and will keep these programs open in the background in a dormant state i.e. not using any resource so that when you come to open them again, they open more quickly and use less resource.

The only exception to this are the odd badly coded apps which don't allow the phone into it's sleep mode and you can see if you have any apps doing this by comparing your screen on and awake times under settings > power
