Root 3 G networks

OK people,
I am putting this question here, as I am sure will get a good answer, because you all know the phones etc.
If thijs is not a good place, please move the thread where it should be.

OK, so Why is it that AT&T can talk and surf, and Verizon cannot?

Just wondering.
Thanks.

The network.... CDMA which Verizon uses cannot do data and voice at the same time, whereas ATT uses GSM that can. Verizon is working on switching to LTE which will be out in 2012 I believe. It will be a 4g network that can obviously do both, if we don't have VoIP by then.

Yep, because Verizon and Sprint use CDMA, which does not support simultaneous voice and data, while AT&T and T-Mobile use GSM, which does.

However, you have to be on their 3G network to utilize this (will not work on EDGE). Good luck with that :D

so are you saying that if att user or tmobile user roams to verizon 3g tower, which is likely since their network blows, they wont be able to do both?

is that what edge is? roaming for other 3g phones?

They won't be able to roam onto Verizon's network. CDMA and GSM are two different radio technologies, they aren't interoperable. Edge is just an older protocol which is slower than 3G, I am not sure if voice & data is available on Edge simultaneously.
