According to what I have read (t mobile and people on the forums) it will get throttled to edge speeds, which would be 2G I believe.

Though I have never passed 5gbs to find out personally.

From what I have been reading today the edge speeds are close to 200kbs which is slow but still usable unless trying to watch video's.

When I had an iPhone on T-Mobile, I could only get EDGE speeds. It was about 0.01-0.02Mbps.
It was ok when you wanted to load some webpages. Pandora worked fine too. Loading videos was a no-go though.

I think if your in a good area ( normal 4g speeds are good) and you get throttled I doubt it would go down to bad edge coverage speeds, but like I said I have not used up the 5gb limit to have any personal experience.

Edge is still faster than virgin mobile 3g.

It is highly unlikely that you'll pass 5gb of data unless you watch videos. Or tether.

I watch plenty of videos. Anyways i live in07087 and the sound of the 2G being faster than virgin's 3G sounds AWESOME. :D
So i'll give it a shot. Or should i just get ST instead? This is really hard :o

The only downside to that $30 plan is the 100 minutes. The great thing about prepaid is you can test it out for a month to see if it works for you.

I could get by with only 100 minutes, and the VoIP quality was too unpredictable for me. To go unlimited I went with Solavei. It's $49 for unlimited talk/text/data unthrottled for 4GB. I like that they have a clearly defined data plan instead of Straight Talk's mystery throttle policy. Solavei also has a referral program which can effectively lower this rate - bonus.

If minutes is a problem, Google Talk is there for you.

Virgins 3g is way to slow. Normal 3g should be 1megabyte a second like on Verizon but its actually like 200kbps.
Yep give this a shot.

What if i go to the hidden menu and change the 4G to EVDO or whatever the setting is called? Is that a loophole to avoid 2G? ;o

If the data limit is reached its throttled by t mobile, its not switched to a different (ie 2G) technology. They just say slows to 2g for a reference on how fast or slow it goes.

Also t mobile is a GSM technology evdo is a cdma technology they are not interchangable.
the setting listed is not going to do anything on your phone, the rom may have the option but its because its a generic one size fits all coding. android runs on both gsm and cdma networks.

just like on a cdma phone the option for gsm is there but selecting it does not change anything because the hardware is not there.

Your throttled down on all the technologies to 2G speeds not like Metro where they only throttle your 4G but not 3G so all you have to do on metro is go into the settings and force 3G.

It definitely depends on your usage. If you average less than 300 minutes, T-Mobile is still the better deal because extra minutes are 10c each. So for $49 you would get 290 minutes plus unlimited texts and 5GB data. And in months you use less, you pay less.
