3G/4G Growing Pains

Maybe this can reduce some of the frustration ... at least a little ...

The nationwide data drops yesterday hit 3G/4G devices and not just the Bionic and not just the Bionic running 5.9.902.

-- Visit the Razr forum and you will see identical problems to the Bionic problems.
-- Visit the Droid X forum and you will not see the problems.

Apparently 3G-only devices were not affected only 3G/4G devices.

So ... for my customers that must have a data connection from their truck to their home office ... it is another day to add to the column ... don't go to 3G/4G yet.

While I have not noticed the data drops today, I have noticed that the data speeds have been pretty bad. I went to update an app that was only 4.5MB and took nearly 2 minutes. This was with the phone showing 4G and 4 full bars.

Is there any word on what the issue is?

I think the issue is from adding towers to specific areas. They have recently erected a tower across the road from my driveway. I was over there the other day talking to the techs that where working at the site then. They told me that the tower will go into use when another few towers where finished in our grid. They also said for us to expect that when the towers are turned on, there will be a few days off and on connectivity. They said it would mostly effect data, but could also effect calls while the head end was being utilized for the additional spectrum.

I had problems yesterday (2/23) up till about 5:00PM EST. I was driving the Ohio turnpike and lost data probably 4 times. Had to shutdown/battery pull and it would be restored (no, I was not surfing the net while driving, but I was watching for meeting notices to arrive via email.) I think this was a .902 issue, as I was able to fix it every time with the above procedure. I *think* taking a call while driving is what killed it each time. I dunno... this is my first experience with the problem - had no issues prior to .902.

After about 5, however, I took calls, but had no more issues. I was back in Michigan then.

Maybe Ohio sucks. :-)
