3G task/status bar icon

on my phone - android 2.3 - there are the usual icons in the task/status bar.

the 3G one appears as a white square with 3G written on it in black when 3G is active.

sometimes however, the icon changes and shows a small blue square with the number 1 in the top right of the white square.

any ideas what this means,

In some areas the 3G signal may not be as strong, or constant, and so your phone only picks up the 1, or 1X signal. If you just got the phone you may want to do a "tower" update. Each cell carrier has a different method for doing this. Contact your provider, as the 'tower" update is a simple thing to do.
