3g watchdog is very very wrong

Senko

Lurker
I've been using the free version of 3g watchdog since July and its been reasonably accurate although I needed to allow for WiFi usage but now its saying I've downloaded 900mb this morning taking me to just under 80% of my limit while the Telstra one my account monitor says I'm still only at 17% of my limit.

Has anyone else experienced this e.g since an update and is there anything I can do to fix it or should I download a different monitoring app? I want two in case of things like this where one's unavailable or plays up.

I suspect that your carrier pushed a big update to your phone, or did some other thing with the data connection that didn't count against your data usage. 3G Watchdog can't tell the difference between data you get charged for vs. data you don't get charged for, unless you know what app is generating the "Free" usage and set up 3GW to ignore it.

I'm just about at the end of my cycle, and T-Mo reports I've used 701.9960MB of data -- while 3GW reports 711.89. It's usually pretty close like that. I'd suggest you go into 3GW and reset the "actual" usage, and go from there.

(I am a huge fan of 3G Watchdog, BTW... even bought the Pro version, ain't I special!)

I don't think its that as I downloaded some small apps as a trial and Telstra one still says 17% but 3g is now over 80% and says I downloaded over 1.2GB.

EDIT

It's definately counting wrong I just downloaded mobile counter then a number of other small apps. Mobile counter increased to just under 30mb, 3g on the other increased by almost 300mb from 1.25, after getting the 300kb mobile counter to 1.28gb.

Most apps uses Android SDK TrafficStats class to derive the count statistics. So to check if the app is wrong is simple, download various counter apps and see each of their reading, if there is some big gap then you can narrow it to that app is counting plain wrong.

Thank you I'm confident 3g watchdog is counting wrong I'm wondering if someone has suggestions to fix it?

Have a look in the Watchdog's settings in Billing Rules. Maybe there is checked the "Count in blocks" box and the block is set to a too big figure.

I have the Pro version so I don't know if the free version has this feature at all.

No that options not in the free. I was actually about to buy the pro one as I was happy with it now I'm reconsidering

Pre-Froyo means it is not using Android SDK TrafficStats class and most likely use it's own devised counting so the results will be hard to compare with other apps that provide data counters.

I had the pro version but uninstalled it because it was horrendously wrong - massively underestimating how much allowance I was using.
