Help 3rd party apps not saving cache

Hi, this is my first time posting so I hope this isn't too much of a noob question. :P

Anyway, as the title says, some of my 3rd party apps aren't storing cache. These apps include miren browser, twitter, skype and memowidget (useful for reading notes on your desktop). The problem with this is that if my galaxy s has been sleeping for a while, or I turn it on, these apps forget my settings (apart from twitter) and open as if it's my first time doing so. When I check their details in Settings->Applications->Manage applications->*desired app such as miren browser* it tells me under the cache heading that the cache is 0.00B big. I wish there was an option to increase cache or at least restore it to default settings. Reinstalling doesn't fix this but oddly new apps don't have this problem.
This is how (I think) it all happened.
Last week I decided to install AVG free app, out of curiosity, to check whether my device might have any problems (it's only a month old and didn't have any noticeable problems anyway). To my surprise it warned me of 60 problems with my applications so I asked it to 'fix' it. Thereafter all my 3rd party apps (all downloaded from the market) kept crashing, occasionally causing my phone to freeze and restart, so I reinstalled all of them. They don't crash now, but annoyingly don't save the settings I assign to them.
I'm aware that performing a factory reset might resolve this problem but as I have quite a few things on my phone I'd really only like to do that as a last option. Any ideas to help? They'd be much appreciated. I've scoured the net for a couple of days and couldn't find any help that fixed this issue for me.
Many thanks in advance. :)

I think the issue is not the cache but something else. I just checked Skype and twitter on my phone and they say 0.00B cache but they remember my settings. I think it is another issue. Try clearing the data not the cache and see if that works. Go to Settings-->Applications-->Manage Applications-->Third-party, find skype for example on the list, open it and click on the Clear data. Open skype enter your information and see if that solves the issue for you.

If not then I would guess you need to do a factory reset, it looks like AVG messed something up.

Also are the applications installed on the internal or external storage?

Thanks for replying! I tried that and I still have the same problem. :(
I don't have an external sd card so all apps are stored on the phone itself.
It does seem like I may have to factory reset but I want to exhaust every possibility before doing so since it feels like it should be a simple problem (even though I'm out of ideas).
My phone isn't rooted but would doing so help at all? I wonder if anyone else has had the same problem before...
:(
