Help 4.2.2 and Netflix

This is my first post. I'm not sure if there is a forum on this already, but I got the 4.2.2 on my Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 GT-P3113 a couple of weeks ago. I did a factory reset and now my Netflix is really laggy and buffers quite a bit. Of course, I tried to uninstall and reinstall, but since it is a system app, no go. Is there anyone else with this issue, or is it just me? Is there anything I can do to resolve this issue?

Thanks in advance.

Testing now on mine, so far it is working fine. Connected to my Cisco E4200 running "DD-WRT v24-sp2 (03/25/13) mega" via the 2.4Ghz radio, full bars on signal.

Well, I watched a whole movie without any issues. Had to pause a few times to help the kids and resumed without issues. I was looking at the WiFi signal every so often and at times it was one bar under full, still had no issues.

I've not done a factory reset on mine, don't really plan to for testing. But, if the problem continues I would suggest clearing the app data for NetFlix. You'll have to sign into the NetFlix again when you start it, but if there is some bug in the app data that should fix it. I've had clearing app data fix issues with other apps more than a few times.

Thanks. I actually thought of clearing app data last night. I did. It worked okay for about 15 minutes, then started skipping and buffering again. I reported it on Play Store as well. I have full WiFi signal when it does it, so I don't know.

Does your router have a page you can view the bandwidth usage of the WAN port? Or for packet collisions? Maybe a computer or device on your network is running updates in the background? My router is connected to a 30Mbps/5Mbps down/up connection so for me even if an update was in progress it is unlikely that I would notice.

Also, have you run an app like Wifi analyzer to see if there are any other Access Points (AP) nearby on the same, or overlapping, wifi channel as yours? I set my channel to the area of the spectrum with the most gap.

Another thing to consider is total number of wireless devices on that AP with your tablet. While I have about 12 devices on my router only about 3 are on Wifi (2 phones and the tablet) and one of the phones connects to the 5Ghz radio so that it has more "free space".

I have no idea. It is my girlfriend's mom's internet. I would ask her, but it would be like asking a brick wall, haha. I will see if I can check into it, though. Thanks again.

I know when I watch Netflix, I am the only one online. Everyone else shuts their computer, phone, whatever off and is asleep. I think the speed they are paying for is 3 mbps download. I am not sure though. I have no problem with other video apps like YouTube, or any other streaming app, just Netflix.

Since it is a system app, have you tried uninstalling updates?

Another option, if you're rooted, you can find the apk of an earlier version and side load it, but make sure you backup your current version.

Yeah, I tried uninstalling updates. It didn't work at all after that. I am not rooted as of yet. It is an option in the future, though. I am just figuring, with my luck, something will happen to it and have to send it in with a voided warranty. February will be a year I will have the Tab.

A 3mb connection didn't sound fast enough to me for Netflix, so I did some checking. On my 15mb connection, Netflix on my 4.2.2 Tab 2 7.0 uses up to 12mb initially when a movie starts, but settles in around 2 - 3mb.

I know when you watch Netflix on a PC, the resolution/throughput is reduced when the connection is slow, but I'm not sure if it works the same way on an Android tablet.

You might grab the speedtest.net app and see what your connection speed actually is.

I realize that nothing with regard to your connection may have changed, but considering the above may help shed some light on the issue.

It might also be possible that prior videos were in standard def, and what you're trying to watch now is in HD.

Will do. Thanks a lot. I didn't know all of that. I will check speed test and let you know.

Yeah, that's like what I was getting on ATT internet service, really sucked if there were more than 1 or 2 devices running. Just may not be able to handle it.

What gets me, is that it was fine before the update to 4.2.2. No problems whatsoever. Now, every other app is fine, just Netflix decides it doesn't want to work properly.

Rooting isn't that tough, do yourself a favor and read read read before you attempt anything and watch a couple YouTube videos and you'll be fine

I have done a good bit of research on it, actually. I am just going to wait until next year, just to be on the safe side. On that note, in your opinion, which is the best way to go?

I don't believe that's enough bandwidth for Netflix.

I found this, which was direct from Netflix:

1 Mb/s for viewing on a laptop computer

2 Mb/s for viewing standard definition video on a TV

4 Mb/s for viewing High Definition video

5 Mb/s or more for the best audio and video experience

The other apps don't put the same kind of bandwidth demands on the Internet connection. I suspect the upgrades resulted in higher-definition video. Perhaps the new version of the app broke NF's automatic bandwidth sensing?

Try searching the web on "Netflix bandwidth requirements" for more hints.

Thanks for all the info, Jim!

You're welcome. If all else fails: It seems it's not too awfully difficult to revert to 4.1.1. I'm now leaning toward not doing the "upgrade," and I've offered to revert my wife's tablet for her. After two days she still very much dislikes 4.2.2's UI.

With the trouble reports I'm reading, it looks like typical Samsung "Generate crap code and push it out the door without much testing." If they follow true-to-form: That'll be followed by "Ignore customer complaints."

This is why I was glad, when I recently asked for handset suggestions, the top recommendations were not for Samsung devices.

Jim

I think I am happy with the update, other than what I had mentioned. I can move apps to SD without having to root, which is an option for the future, though. But yes, it does sound like Samsung threw the update out and said, "deal with it".

I did another factory reset. I kept Play Store quiet and manually downloaded my apps while keeping apps I didn't really need off of it. There was obviously an app that wasn't working well with Netflix or something. I watched Netflix all night and it didn't stutter whatsoever. The Tab runs a lot better as well.
