4G Hotspot working without paying or use of third party app

chckmlls2

Lurker
I didn't use the built in hotspot feature at first because it isn't supposed to work without paying the tethering fee.
So like everyone in that rare "NO WIFI!" position, I decided to give it a try.
*MIND YOU*
Before this I went to the Metro Store to upgrade my plan to unlimited 4G data and add the mobile hotspot feature only to be told that DUH, they won't let me do both.
*ANYWAY*
I turned it on and.......IT WORKS!!!!
But, like Im sure anyone thinks, what about the charges?
Will they stop my service if they "catch me"?

I called the store (I really did lol) and told them. The lady said, no that shouldnt work, but hey lucky you. And assured me that they couldn't charge me this and that.

But I live in Richmond California...............hella ghetto and none of the businesses here are on the up and up or even care to get you the right answer.

So I've heard of service being stopped and ESN's backlisted so that you cant activate your phone with metro ever again.

Anybody have the same situation? I dont know if I should be using this service or If Im going to get terminated.

Also If you read all this, I cant get the hotspot to work with Chrome. Only FF by switching the user agent to Android.
I just cant figure it out on Chrome.

Thank you all so much. Look forward to answering your q's

I've also been using USB tethering a lot lately due to my home internet service being super slow. With my home internet I usually download at 150kb/s while with USB tethering I usually download at 900kb/s.

OMG THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!
It did work flawlessly!
I've been using FF, which I grew up using so nothing wrong with that, but I really missed the intuit of chrome. Many thanks!

I did try a user agent switcher but the wrong one ><

I've been doing this since the phone first came out. Hotspot, tethering default, and 3rd party tethering WiFi and USB for free. Nothings happened to me. Tbh there is ALOT of threads with this particular debate. I also added a long list of strings that you can use with most browsers.

The tethering fee only applies to the 50$ plan, as for the 60$ one it is included. same for the 40$ plan it is included. you have nothing to worry about other than being throttled for using wayyyy to much data in a month.

The only bad thing is that the hotspot signal only loads Facebook, YouTube and Google, that's on my netbook, I've been trying to load other websites and it can't, no matter if it is Chrome or explorer, perhaps if I pay the hotspot fee it would load all websites, or is it possible to load all websites with the regular hotspot? Can someone help me please?

So far the best information that I have found on tethering a stock lg motion with the so called "unlimited" plan is to use a user agent switcher.

That's all fine for casual browsing with a favorite browser. It does present some further complications for the more sophisticated user. In my case, it is necessary in times like these where I am on the water and have no access to wifi.

It is essential for me to be able to connect all browsers without changing the user agent strings.

So, I can confirm that connecting thru a VPN eliminates this requirement. HOWEVER, I would like to know the properties of this VPN connection that masks my tethering usage. I am currently on my win7 laptop tethered on an unlimited metro pcs data plan. Its working cause I am connected to a remote windows based VPN.

If I disconnect the VPN, I obviously can't post here unless I change user agent.

I am about to do some testing with other protocols and ports such as FTP, usenet, and a game or two.

I'll post back, but I think it might simply be enough to always use encrypted data.

If we can just make all of our data leave encrypted, all these little tricks would probably not be necessary.

But, i'm a novice when it comes to my phone and how it does what it does at this point.

I noticed it worked with out the addition to my plan, when I told the guy about it because he knows I tether with 3rd party stuff he said they give you a trial period free.

mine hasn't worked since about the first couple weeks of having the phone when it was first released.

they will terminate your service and block your isn if you are caught im speaking from personal experience it happend to me

Where can i find what to enter into the fields for the new user agent?

https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/1061943?hl=en

Name:Googlebot
User agent: Mozilla/5.0 (compatible; Googlebot/2.1; +http://www.google.com/bot.html)
Group: Crawlers
Append: Replace
Indicator Flag: GOO

I've also noticed that they don't block normal TCP connections. What this means is that you can use a vpn provider such as strongvpn, vyprvpn, proxy.sh etc... (or setup your own openvpn server at your house [I believe XP Home can be used as a MS-PPTP VPN server, but for sure Xp pro, vista ultimate, Windows 7 ultimate wizmo gizmo frodo edition can. Windows 8, I think, has crappy, dumbed-down networking]) and they will not block anything, and you can use the correct user-agent. This would only be useful if they start blocking all non-mobile web browsers.

It works. I used the one on settings, had to create a password. Been doing it for about 2 months now. I only use it on my ipad to watch netflix or browse the web. I don't use the phone while I'm using the ipad, the only thing that sucks is when I try to download a movie through itunes to rent. A 2 gig movie will download in about 8-10 hours. Sometimes it downloads fast, then half ways through the download it stops & restarts. Really terrible.
But, the hotspot indeed works.i have the 60 dollar unlimited plan.

So I recently upgraded to the unlimited plan and was thinking of tethering my PS3 to stream Netflix. However, I'm hesitant to do so, because I see some people say not to do it. Am I safe to tether and stream?
