Help 5.0.1 woes

Mr qwerty

Lurker
I upgraded my Nexus 4 from 4.4 to 5.0.1 and now cannot connect to google services. The first symptom I noticed after the upgrade was inability to connect to google play with my main account (I have two accounts).

I followed advice posted elsewhere to clear google play cache, which did nothing, and then to delete and re-create the account. When I try to re-create the account, I get "Couldn't sign in. There was a problem communicating with Google servers". After searching other postings for this message, I logged into the account via the web interface and confirmed that 2-factor authentication was off (it had been all along).

With my secondary google account, meanwhile, I can't get a connection to gmail via the gmail app, so it looks as though google server access has been generally borked by the upgrade.

And yes, I've tried powering off and back on. Any ideas anyone?

Hi Mr. qwerty, and welcome to Android Forums :)

What route did you take to upgrade your N4 - over-the-air update or flashing a factory image?

Hi and thanks for the welcome.

In reply to your question, it was an OTA update, though I had to run an update check (from Settings/About phone) to get it. Prior to that, the last time the phone checked automatically for an update was early Sep 2014 apparently. (I was wondering why I'd received the 4.3 and 4.4 updates automatically OTA, but not 5.0 or 5.0.1.).

I hate to say it, but I know a lot of people encountered strange issues like yours when upgrading via the OTA. 4.4->5.0 was a HUGE change, and I guess some stuff happens to get broken during the migration. :(

So you're probably not going to like my next suggestion, which is to perform a factory data reset. There are details on how to make the process as painless as possible here: http://androidforums.com/threads/lollipop-headaches.882908/#post-6829326

In fact, you may want to give that entire thread a read. :thumbsupdroid:

We're here to help out in whatever way we can along the way. :)

Thanks for the reply...I was hoping to avoid the factory reset, but may be forced to do one.

I've read the thread to which you linked: I'd like to keep my SMS history, but given that I don't have one of the SMS backup apps installed, and, of course, am not able to install one, is there any other way of backing up the messages prior to doing a reset?

Thanks for the help. I've managed to install Helium from the apk, as suggested by you. I've also installed the Windows desktop application, along with the necessary drivers. I've put the Nexus USB into the necessary mode, but can't get the thing working. When I plug in the Nexus, the desktop app gives me a big green tick and says that Helium has been enabled on my Android, but the Nexus insists that it is waiting for said enablement to take place, and advises that I should get the Helium Desktop for my pc! Searching the web suggests that others have encountered this problem with Helium, though not perhaps with Nexus 4.

Any other suggestions for a backup utility that doesn't require rooting?

That's the only one that I'm familiar with, unfortunately.

You could also try the SMS Backup and Restore app that @lunatic59 mentioned in that other thread - the developer's website pointed me to a direct APK download here: http://slideme.org/application/sms-backup-restore (just click the download button). Maybe since that's a single-purpose app (just SMS backup rather than everything else) it will give fewer headaches in getting going.

Let us know how it goes. :)

Thanks for the response. I did try the SMS Backup link you provided in your previous message, and managed to install the app manually using it, but the app was non-functional. All I got when I ran it was an unresponsive splash screen for slideme, the hosting website. I tried APKs from one or two other sites, such as appbrain, but they insisted on installing the hosting site's download app first, and took me to the google app store app to do it, but of course, that wasn't working because I had no access to google services, as mentioned above.

So I bit the bullet and did a factory reset, and now everything is fine thanks, though I have to say, it seems to me to be less than wonderful design when I have intact data on my phone (SMS message history) that I am unable to preserve prior to taking a step which is going to delete it (factory reset) in order to regain full functionality on the phone!

Thanks for taking the time to assist - it's appreciated.

I'm glad you were able to resume operation, though I do hate that you had to sacrifice data in the process. Google is actively taking a lot of steps to make that process of data migration both less painful and more reliable via cloud-based backup and restore, but I don't think that they have a proper solution in place for SMS messages just yet.
