500MB Data Allowance = scared!

Hey all,

I have finally received my HTC Desire HD in the post today from Orange and, having been on wi-fi all day with some apps syncing every hour has got me thinking: does this mean that if I'm away from wi-fi, at school for example, that everything will still sync? And will it use a lot of data?

Being used to using a Blackberry as my previous phone, syncing/updates were minimal (only emails), plus I was on an unlimited data plan anyway with O2, but now that I have a limit, I'm really scared!

If I turn off 'Mobile network' in settings -> Wireless & networks, that still means I can receive calls and texts, right?

Sorry about the noob-y questions; I've never had to consider this before! :P

Thanks a lot! :)
Is there any way to change settings so apps manually update when on 3G network, but if I'm in a wifi area, they sync automatically?

No probs. :)

There is an app I've just found out about from another thread called automatei. It apparently has very good options for that sort of thing, but never having used it, I couldn't tell you, sorry.

You can change the sync settings of various accounts separately (gmail/facebook etc), via the accounts and sync menu, but specific apps you download should have their own sync settings. If you're talking about installed apps updating themselves to new versions etc, I think they'll only check for updates when you access the market.

Incidentally, with 500MB you should be fine. I've the same bundle and the most I've ever used was circa 360MB. That was when they took the wireless router away at work and I had to use 3G to surf the sites that work doesn't allow. Youtube took quite a hammering. If you are worried, there are apps that monitor usage so you can keep tabs on it. I use Netcounter, but 3G Watchdog is another popular one.

there is a app called tasker which would turn on and allow you join your wifi soon as you get home,
looks like it would take a while to play with to setup right tho

Don't be scared. I've had it since November last year with Orange, and 500mb is more than enough if you use WiFi at home.

You should be scared, 500MB is FA!

I WAS new to this HTC as well after moving from the iPhone4... I have done a lot of searching, messing around this loads of programs, thankfully on wifi... I have found the very best on the market data manager is "3G Watchdog Pro" very very accurate, not like some which seem to be accurate but do conflict with other data managers... if you decide to have this one, ensure you dont have any other data manager installed, you wont need another.

You're only likely to bust your 500MB limit if you spend all day tethered to your laptop or watching lots of YouTube. Phones are generally much lighter on data than PCs.

I have a 1gb flex plan and in the first month i had the phone i did less than 500mb

I would also like to add that i only download apps at home on wifi and i don't do any streaming when on mobile network.

IMO you'll wreck that 500mb plan after about 20-odd days. I struggled with 1gb til I went to the One plan on 3 (proper unlimited data). I am on wifi at home but watch videos, stream music, download apps etc etc on the move, so if you do any of those things I would consider changing your routine or data plan..

500MB is pants.
I'm fully aware that it's pants & therefore use it as little as possible. (most annoying coming from an unlimited plan)

For example, let's say i'm out & about & i want to listen to a DAB radio station (6music or R5L probably), a 2 hour show will use about 1/3 of that 500MB. (R5L less as it uses a low bit rate)
A 1/3 of my monthly plan in 2 hours for simply listening to a radio station... absolute wank.

Don't even get me started on youtube & pornhub.

Depends on the App and what data is sync'd
If you get a billion emails a day, there may be trouble ahead ;)

500MB is not bad for twitter/email/casual browsing, however if you find you are always nearing limit
1) try not to update apps OTA (use home wi-fi / manual update only)
2) don't allow image auto-download in email; click to view if you really must

suggest you get smth like Traffic Counter Extended by Carl Hopf (Free)
set the rollover/reset date & 'alert when near limit'
add widget to display current Cell usage

Unless you really need them, turn of Stocks & News, or give them a greater sync delay

It,s got to be on three...
The one plan or pay as you go have 80 GB of data I've been on the one plan for a while and I'm up
To 31 GB this month alone .
I know it,s a bit extreme but I'm streaming video and catch up tv all day while at work .
On pay as you go sim only

I'm on orange's dolphin 25 with only 500MB data and maxed it out last month (my first month of the contract) and got an extra

I'm on 500MB and find it fine for just general browsing. Ive always got mobile network off and just switch it on when I need it. I don't see the point of the phone syncing and updating when I'm working. I've always got WiFi on and when Ib the house just connect to that.
you need to change how often you want everything to update ie emails, friendstream etc

Rubbish about tethering. I exceed 1gb a month easy without wifi. I use interest radio a lot:watch tv catchup during my lunch for the news, easy to push past 500mb if you use data services regularly. In a modern world of mobile data use, UK operators let this country down and hold us back compared to most modern countries.

That is all....I'd dump that while I was on the toilet.
